At Sonoraville Elementary School, our faculty and staff encourage our students to read a variety of genres to ensure they become well-rounded and fluent readers. There are many benefits from reading. Reading increases vocabulary and enhances critical thinking. Reading helps improve memory and creativity. It can lead to improved writing skills and improved concentration/focus. To enjoy reading is a gift that lasts a lifetime.

Every month I will spotlight one of my favorite books. I hope you will take this wonderful opportunity to enjoy some quality time with your child.

Principal’s Book of the Month May

Alexander's grandparents came to visit and gave him a dollar. He thought he was rich. Although he was encouraged to save his dollar, Alexander has trouble saving money. The temptation to spend is so great, he cannot resist. Alexander buys some chewing gum, makes losing bets with his brothers, and spends his money on useless things at a yard sale, among other things. Soon his money is gone.

Alexander tries to think of ways to earn more money. He hopes he might lose a tooth, but he has no loose teeth. He looks in phone booths for change, but has no luck. Soon, Alexander is discouraged. He has spent his dollar and is left with only a one-eyed teddy bear, an incomplete deck of cards, a half-melted candle, and some bus tokens. ~summary by Professional Development Institute

This story always reminds me of my son Sam when he was small. Sam always wanted to spend the money he earned or was given. He would want to purchase gum or other items. We would always tell him the money was burning a hole in his pocket. This would mean as soon as he had  money he was ready to spend it! Since this time we have taught Sam how to save your money and also when it is time to spend your money to spend it wisely. Think about your money. Do you save it and spend it wisely? Talk to your parents or guardians about money so you do not make the same mistakes as Alexander.
