Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl Information 4th & 5th Grade Students The Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl is a competition for students where the questions are based on books selected by the Georgia Children's Book Award Committee. The competition is similar to a "quiz bowl" where a team of 5 students goes against another team of 5 students to see who can answer the questions first and accurately. This competition is held annually and begins at the county level in January if enough teams are interested. The next step is the regional bowl in February followed by the state competiton in March. All interested 4th and 5th grade students can become members of our Reading Bowl Club. However, only up to 10 students can make our SES school competition team. Our reading bowl club prepares for the competitions by discussing the books, preparing questions for practice sessions, practicing with the quiz buzzers along with other related activities. We also have fun activities based on the books. Note: All books are selected by the Georgia Children's Book Award Committee and will be part of the competitions. It is up to each student and parent to decide if they want to read a nominated book. Please see below for this year's list along with some links to related websites. A great place to preview book titles is by reading reviews on Amazon.
