 School Parent Involvement Policy

Ashworth Middle School

Title I School Parent Involvement Policy 2009-10

Purpose: The involvement of parents at Ashworth Middle School is critical to the successful education of our students. Ongoing efforts will be made throughout the school year to solicit input from parents and to seek their involvement at our school.

Based on needs identified through parent and faculty input and surveys, the following strategies will be implemented at Ashworth Middle School:

I. The Teacher/Student/Parent Compact is distributed to parents and students at the beginning of the year. Both English and Spanish versions of the Compact are available. In addition to the Compact, all students receive a student handbook, which includes the code of conduct, procedures, and calendar of events for the school year. During the first week of school, teachers review this information with the students. Parents are also asked to sign that they have read the handbook and discussed its content with their child(ren).

II. Information about school policies and involvement opportunities are communicated with parents through the following routes:

  1. Student Handbook & Gordon County Schools calendar

  2. Student Agenda

  3. School Counselor & Family Advocate

  4. PTSA Council

  5. Local School Council

  6. "Parent to Parent" training sessions sponsored by the Family Advocate

  7. State of the School presentation in August addressing AMS Title I & AYP status

  8. Quarterly Family Standards Nights

  9. Parent-Link is utilized to send telephone messages home to students

  10. School newsletter sent home every nine weeks

  11. School website as well as individual teacher websites

III. Regular meetings of parents will be convened to discuss school wide programs, including their rights to be involved in the annual revision of the School Improvement Plan.

  1. All parents are invited to attend all school meetings and activities throughout the year, including meetings which involve the annual review of the School Improvement Plan.

  2. Parents and community members are asked to serve on committees such as the Local School Council and PTSA Council.

  3. Parent meetings and involvement opportunities are scheduled before, during, and outside of school hours.

IV. Parents are provided with information on school curriculum, school performance, and individual student progress and assessment.

  1. Parents have the opportunity to sign up for I-Parent to access their child's academic progress.

  2. Parents will receive progress reports between each nine week period and a report card each nine week period. Parents will also receive their child's CRCT scores in May. Additional copies may be requested in the counseling office.

  3. School performance is addressed by the administration at the beginning of each school year and during the State of the School presentation. School curriculum is addressed quarterly during AMS Family Standards Nights.

V. Parents will be given timely responses to their concerns and suggestions.

A. All concerns or suggestions submitted in writing or verbally are responded to in a timely manner. Information provided from the parent surveys have resulted in the action steps in this parent involvement policy.
