Mrs. Farist’s 8th Grade Students Put Writing Skills to Real-World Use at SMS |
Because of the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010, our cafeteria staff was required to make many changes to the food they serve our students. You've probably heard from your child about these changes. As part of a persuasive writing unit, Mrs. Farist's 8th grade REACH classes recently wrote essays expressing their opinion about the impact that the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010 has had on school lunch. These essays were forwarded to Congressman Tom Graves. These classes recently received a response from Mr. Graves, thanking them for their input, and informing them that their opinions, along with others across the nation, helped to influence the Department of Agriculture to relax some of the restrictions on the types of food that can be served in the school cafeteria. He pointed out that this is a great example of how concerned citizens of any age can make a difference, and he encouraged students to continue speaking out about issues that affect them. |

Leaders Lead The Way With FFA |

Agribusiness leaders know that the students in the FFA today are going to become the industry and political leaders of tomorrow. Their time spent leading and working with the students gives high expectation for a more prosperous Georgia in the future.
Johnson Collins of Pickens County High School and Makayla Holmes from Sonoraville Middle were announced as winners of the Northwest Georgia Junior Public Speaking Career Development Event (CDE) last night at the area competition. These top two individuals have earned the opportunity to advance on to state contest held annually in Macon, Georgia. Citlaly Cisneros of Bagley Middle, Maddie Matthews from Fannin Co Middle, and Rockmart High School's FFA member Melissa Gilmer were top finalist. Judges for the event included Gordon County Career Tech Director Amy Parker
,
John Richardson General Manager of Learning Labs, and John Hatfield Environmental Instructor of Chattahoochee Tech.
The Public Speaking CDE is designed to recognize outstanding FFA members for their ability to present a prepared public speech in a competitive setting. Members write and deliver the speech from memory. The event gives FFA members the opportunity to develop the ability to communicate in a powerful, organized and professional manner. The competition, hosted at Ashworth Middle School in Calhoun, is one of many educational activities in which FFA members practice the lessons taught in agricultural education classes.
The Georgia FFA Organization, formerly known as the Future Farmers of America, is
a national youth organization of more than 30 thousand student members - all preparing for leadership and careers in the science, business and technology of agriculture.
The FFA mission is to make a positive difference in the lives of students by developing their potential for premier leadership, personal growth and career success through agricultural education. The Georgia Department of Education provides leadership and helps set direction for FFA as a service to local agricultural education programs.

SMS 8th Graders Show They Are Bright |

Students in Mr. Haney's 8th grade science class started a unit on light (S8P4A: Identify the characteristics of electromagnetic and mechanical waves). His classes have talked about the electromagnetic spectrum and created mnemonics to remember the arrangement, from lowest frequency to highest frequency (radio, microwave, infrared, visible, ultraviolet, x-ray, and gamma rays). The classes focused on rainbows and made predictions of where rainbows would fall along the electromagnetic spectrum. Afterwards, students conducted a Rainbow Lab. Students had to measure how much liquid to pour into a cylinder. Students made careful observations and recorded their discoveries of what results when certain colors combine. Students at Sonoraville Middle School continue to show how "bright" they are when they work with science, which makes them
RED HOT .

SMS 8th Graders are Electrified! |

Students in Mr. Haney's class conducted a Static Electricity lab utilizing balloons. Students saw how a charged balloon can make hair rise. Some students also played a tug of war with a coca cola can as other students watched to see which charged balloon had the greatest charge. Several students became fascinated when they charged a balloon and put it next to running water. Finally, students would rub one balloon and leave another balloon, which was not charged, to see that the balloons had opposite charges, which created an attraction. On the other hand, students would also rub two balloons together. Students noticed that both rubbed balloons carried the same charge and would repel. Students got "quite a charge" out of this lab. In fact, the lab was a "hair raising experience" for many students.

SMS Wins GOLD!!! |

Recently, Sonoraville Middle School received a GOLD award for making great gains on state assessments under the Single Statewide Accountability System (SSAS). Under SSAS, the Governor's Office of Student Achievement awards schools that show excellence in student achievement and/or progress in student achievement. Award-winning schools must meet the following criteria, which are based on the results of the most recent two years of Criterion Referenced Competency Test (CRCT) (grades 3-8 in reading, English/language arts, math, social studies, and science) and/or the Georgia High School Graduation Test (GHSGT) (grade 11 first time test takers - English/language arts, math, science, and social studies). Criteria are based on Full Academic Year (FAY) students. Both the CRCT and the GHSGT classify achievement in terms of the percent of students who a) do not meet standards, b) meet standards, and c) exceed standards. The gold criteria met by SMS Students include: 1)making AYP for 2 consecutive years, 2)having more than 30% of students exceed standards on the CRCT, and 3) placing in the 97th percentile of the greatest gains. SMS was one of only 5 middle schools in Georgia to receive the Gold Award.
This award is another reflection of our Red Hot Effort by our Faculty, Staff, and Students! Go Phoenix!

SMS Science Explores with Litmus |

Students in Mr. Haney's 8th grade science class recently conducted a lab over acids and bases. (S8P1 Students will examine the scientific view of the nature of matter.) Students utilized indicators, litmus paper, to determine the acidity or basicity of a substance. Students made predictions prior to the lab if they thought a substance (Pine Sol, Vegetable Oil, for example) was an acid or base and predicted the pH number. Students then tested out their predictions to see if they were correct. Students later utilized a game on the Internet to sort substances in order based on their acidity or basicity. Students worked well and explained their reasons as to why a substance was a base or an acid. There is no predicting that 8th grade science remains

SMS Science Build Houses of Cards |

Students in Mr. Haney's 8th grade science class recently completed a unit on forces. In addition to playing tug of war with the other 8th grade science classes. The students made a house of cards to further demonstrate balanced and unbalanced forces. Students worked well together to not have any unbalanced forces knock over their houses. Some students would later play the role of a hurricane (an unbalanced force) and blow down someone else's house. Students showed why they were kings and queens of their houses and proved to be aces in developing their houses. Sonoraville Middle science shows once again why student work continues to be

Instructions in the Dark at SMS |

Career Development students completed a challenge that included following instructions, giving instructions and active listening. One student was the instructor and the other student was blindfolded. The challenge was for the student instructor to give directions to the blindfolded student on how to fold a paper airplane. Teams were to follow directions and fold as many airplanes as possible in ten minutes. When completed the instructor guided their partner outside and had them toss as many planes as possible in one minutes. The teams whose planes flew the longest distance and were folded correctly were the winning team. Students shown above are Corey Scoggins, Robert Rountree, Owen Lingerfelt, Caleb Jordon, Johnathan Torres, Justin Chastain, Jose Barron, Dexter Bramlett, and Ashton Silvers.

The Force is with SMS 8th Grade |

Students in all 8th grade science classes at Sonoraville Middle School recently participated in a friendly competition of tug-of-war. Students have been studying the effects of balanced forces and unbalanced forces on objects (Standard S8P3.Students will investigate relationship between force, mass, and the motion of objects.b. Demonstrate the effect of balanced and unbalanced forces on an object in terms of gravity, inertia, and friction.). The tug-of-war activity helped reinforce the concept of unbalanced forces as the side with the greater force would win. At the resting state, the rope would not move, thus creating a balanced force. SMS Hosts “Phoenix Fly-by” for Rising 6th Graders |

It is hard to believe this school year is almost over! We are excited to welcome the class of 2018 to Sonoraville Middle School next year. SMS school counselors and teachers are already making plans to create a smooth transition for our rising 6th graders to middle school. SMS hosted a transition program, "Phoenix Fly-By" for a brief introduction to the building and 6th grade teachers on Monday, May 9 from 6 to 7 p.m. in the school's cafeteria. We want to prepare our students for success and start them thinking about all Sonoraville Middle School has to offer. Parents and students signed up for special classes such as chorus, band, and weight training and toured their potential classrooms. Parents were introduced to the PTSA organization as well. After the brief but informative "Fly-By" through our building, future 6th graders left even more excited for their next adventure as RED HOT Phoenix!

"Student Ambassadors", current 6th grade students also in special t-shirts, led 5th graders in small group tours. Students made stops in the Cafeteria, Media Center, 6th grade hallway, Greenhouse, and Band and Chorus classrooms. They received folders containing all the information a rising 6th grader could need. They had the opportunity to ask questions in a small group setting and receive valuable advice on not just surviving, but thriving in middle school. This fall, Sonoraville Middle School is excited to welcome a new group of Phoenix, the class of 2018!

SMS Chorus brings home EXCELLENCE! |
SMS recently competed at Armuchee High School Choral Evaluation. SMS had 4 choirs to perform and ALL of them received a performance rating of EXCELLENT! They also are judged in sight-reading. This means the students looked at the dots (notes) on the page for the first time and within 3 minutes of practicing, were able to sing it perfectly. That doesn't sound difficult, but they do this within parts - for example, a choir that sings in three part harmony - each part has their own separate line to sight-read, but all three parts sing their lines at the same time to create a really cool line of music with harmony. They all received an EXCELLENT rating in sight-reading, with Honor Chorus bringing home a SUPERIOR rating (they read it perfectly!!!) Congratulations to SMS chorus! You are RED HOT!

SMS 8th Graders Make (Sound) Waves |

Students in Mr. Haney's 8th grade science class recently studied sound. As a culminating activity, students created kazoos and telephones using paper cups. The standard used in class was S8P4E: Relate the properties of sound to everyday experiences. As students developed their kazoos, they saw that as you increase the loudness of an object, the resulting amplitude also increases. Students also enjoyed getting an opportunity to "play in the band" with their kazoos.
Students also got to work on making paper telephone cups. Students realized through trial and error that a strong signal could not be sent if the "telephone cords" were not tight. Students obtained larger strings and made their strings tighter so that a sound wave could be produced.
Students enjoyed the activities. Once again, students showed that

SMS Students Get Energized |

Students in Teresa Smith's science class at SMS recently completed a lesson on series and parallel circuits. Students worked with an energy ball and realized that in order for the ball to work, it must be part of a complete circuit. Students worked to show that if there is a break in a series circuit, then the ball will not work. If the ball is set up in a parallel circuit and there is a break in the circuit, the ball can still work. They realized that switches are nothing more than devices that put conductors together to turn something on and separate them to turn something off.
GPS: S8P5: b. Demonstrate the advantages and disadvantages of series and parallel circuits and how they transfer energy.

Ms. Hensley enjoys sports as well as watching her son play baseball and basketball.

Ms. Kim Coots is the Guidance Secretary at SMS. She grew up in Norcross and moved to the Calhoun area 6 years ago to live on the farm she and her family always wanted. SMS Science: A Hair Raising Experience |

On Tuesday, February 8, students in Mr. Haney's 8th grade class at SMS conducted a lab over static electricity. Students rubbed their balloons to a cloth or article of clothing to see how other objects would react around a charged balloon. Students discovered that when balloons "came together" that opposite charges attract whereas like charges repel . Students also picked up pink bubble wrap as well as other loose pieces of paper with their charged balloons. Finally, students got to see how electrons rub off of each other when they rubbed each others hair with a balloon. Students enjoyed this lab as it was really a "hair raising experience."

Bluebirds over Sonoraville |

It's getting close to spring and that means blue bird box time! Career Development students at SMS participated in the 7th annual bluebird box building afterschool activity. Students constructed nesting boxes to take home and also to be placed on the area bluebird trail around the school and Sonoraville Park.
Students studied bluebird habitat, nesting requirements and why it's necessary to provide nesting boxes for this beautiful American bird species. These builders were enthusiastic and quick studies as they learned tool skills, teamwork and knowledge to build a great nesting box to attract bluebirds to their home habitat.
Thanks to all the students who participated in this community service activity. Special thanks to Mr. David Erwin who volunteered his time to help with this worthy cause.

SHS Students Visit Mr. Bennett's 6th grade Earth Science Class |

SHS students visited Mr. Bennett's 6th Grade Earth Science class to teach them all about Chemistry. Students participated in a number of engaging games created by students in Mrs. Long's Chemistry students. 6th graders learned about the Periodic Table of Elements and how to read and understand different chemical symbols. Mr. Bennett's class then graded each game on its creativity and how well it taught the concepts.
SC3 Students will use the modern atomic theory to explain the characteristics of atoms.
SC4. Students will use the organization of the Periodic Table to predict properties of elements.
a. Use the Periodic Table to predict periodic trends including atomic radii, ionic radii, ionization energy, and electronegativity of various elements.
b. Compare and contrast trends in the chemical and physical properties of elements and their placement on the Periodic Table.

Elements of Learning at SMS |

Students in Mr. Haney's 8th grade science class recently studied the periodic table of elements. Students helped created a periodic table of elements using sidewalk chalk. Students walked to elements that were noble gases, alkali metals, and metalloids. At the end of this activity, students all selected a metal on which to stand. Students saw that the periodic table of elements contains more metals than nonmetals and were able to identify groups/families as well as rows on the periodic table. The standard used for this activity is S8P1F: Recognize that there are more than 100 elements and some have similar properties as shown on the Periodic Table of Elements.

SMS GA History Students Are Seeing Ghosts! |

M r. Casey's 8th grade Social Studies Classes used photographs from the American Civil War to learn how to use photographs as primary sources. This lesson reinforced the GPS Social Studies Skills Matrix: Information Processing Skills numbers 6, 10, 11, and 15.
Students learned how photography began in the 1830's, but was still a young technology during the Civil War. They learned how it had many limitations that impact how it is used a primary source. The cameras were large and heavy, had to be reloaded after every shot with film that was made of glass which needed to be process soon after being exposed, pictures were only black and white, and the exposure times were long when compared with modern cameras. Students learned how long exposure times often required pictures to be posed and how that movements could have interesting effects, such as blurring, people with two faces or no face at all, and "ghosts". They learned that the negatives could get scratched or even broken, which altered the image. The students also learned that these limitations meant that most of the photographs taken during the war were of the aftermath of battle.
The class also used a photo Analysis process that was designed and developed by the education staff of the National Archives and Records Administration. At the end of the lesson Mr. Casey used his camera to show the class the limitations of long exposure times by creating photos of the students with blurring, people with two faces or no face at all, and "ghosts".

SMS Announces PTA Reflections Contest Winners |

Each year, the PTA Reflections Program challenges students to create art inspired by a specific theme. The 2010-2011 theme is "Together we can…" Students participate in the Reflections Program by submitting entries to a local PTA or PTSA. Nationally, the program has six arts areas-dance choreography, film production, literature, musical composition, photography, and visual arts-and four grade divisions-primary, intermediate, middle/junior, and senior.
The PTA Reflections Program is designed to enhance a quality arts education by providing an opportunity for students to explore their artistic talents and receive positive recognition for their efforts.
When children express themselves through words, pictures, music, dance, and other art forms, they grow intellectually and socially. They learn to analyze their thoughts, feelings, and ideas; learn to look at things, people, and experiences in a fresh and exciting way; and become more interested in the ideas and works of others.
We are so proud of our talented artists at SMS!

Sonoraville Middle School Strives to Make a Difference |

Perhaps you have heard the story of a young girl walking along the beach after a storm.
A man on the beach
where thousands of starfish
lay dying in the sun
saw a girl tossing them
into the sea, one by one.
"Why bother?" he asked.
"You won't make a difference."
Tossing yet another
starfish into the sea,
the girl said,
"I made a difference
to that one."
Every adult at Sonoraville Middle School received a mug with the inspirational poem to remind us of our commitment to making a difference. We also signed a starfish "pledge" for a bulletin board displayed prominently at the entrance of the school. To renew the pledge for the 2010-2011 school year, new teachers and staff received a starfish to add to the bulletin board.
Our administration believes there is something very special in each and every one of us. We have all been gifted with the ability to make a difference. And if we can become aware of that gift, we gain the vision to shape the future… one student at a time.
Pictured with the bulletin board is Mr. Allen Bowen, SMS Principal and Ms. Jenny Akridge, art teacher.
Pictured signing and posting their starfish are Mr. Jason Brock, SMS Assistant Principal; and Ms. Meredy Malone, ESS teacher. Other new faculty members that were welcomed into the SMS family this year are Mr. Vincent Whitley, Mr. Randy Haney, Mr. Rick Baggett, Ms. Cheryl Crawford, Mr. Jeff Jackson, Mr. Jason McGuire, Ms. Crystal Avery, Ms. Jamie Mullinax, Ms. Holly Woodring and Mr. Wayne McIntosh.

J. Tom Morgan visits SMS and AMS |

Former DeKalb County District Attorney and author of the book "Ignorance Is No Defense: A Teenager's Guide to Georgia Law" visited both Gordon County Middle Schools last Tuesday. Mr. Morgan spoke to 7th and 8th grader students about the "Seven Deadly Sins" laws in Georgia and how those laws affect teenagers. His presentation included real life examples of Georgia teenagers that became his clients through their lack of knowledge about the responsibilities and rights of the "Seven Deadly Sins" law. In Georgia, 13 and 14 year olds can be prosecuted as adults if they violate one of the "Seven Deadly Sins." Students found the presentation informative and interesting. Later that evening, a community forum was held at Trinity Baptist Church where Mr. Morgan discussed the laws for parents of teenagers. For more information, go to www.ignoranceisnodefense.com

SMS Students Balance Forces |

8th grade science students in Mr. Randy Haney's class recently completed a lesson on balanced and unbalanced forces. To reinforce these concepts, students built houses of cards and played a friendly competition of tug of war. The science standard was S8P3(B): Demonstrate the effects of balanced and unbalanced forces on an object in terms of gravity, inertia, and friction. Relating classroom activities such as these to the standard is another positive way that SMS links learning to engagement.

SMS Wins GRAD Attendance Award |
One of the main events sponsored by GRAD (Get Ready, Achieve, and Dream) each year is a rotating attendance bowl. Each year the schools in both the county and the city system compete monthly for the attendance bowl. Schools submit their attendance rate each month to GRAD and if they have the highest percentage they get to maintain the attendance bowl trophy at their school throughout the following month.
Sonoraville Middle School won the bowl a total of 6 times during the 2009-2010 school year- beating both Ashworth Middle and Calhoun Middle. To celebrate this achievement, SMS was awarded the bowl to keep.
The idea of the attendance bowl- however simple, reminds students, staff, and the community the importance of being in school. Shown pictured with the attendance bowl is (left to right): David Weaver, school counselor; Kelly Gentry, family advocate; Kim Coots, attendance secretary; Christi Gallman, registrar; Allen Bowen, principal; Priscilla Coon, school counselor; and Whitney Carnes, school social worker.

SMS “Scientists” at Work |

SMS 6th grade Earth Science students have been studying standard safety procedures and the scientific method to satisfy the science curriculum standards. Each student devised a hypothesis about how an egg could escape damage if dropped from a high distance. To test their theories, students designed and created egg safety systems. Next, they conducted a field investigation by holding an "egg drop" from the stadium bleachers. Some eggs survived without a crack, but others weren't so lucky!

In this unit 8th grade students had the opportunity to design, construct and test a wheeled vehicle to withstand a head on collision with a concrete wall while protecting a passenger (egg) during the collision. Student teams used the engineering design process to develop their vehicle. Teams brainstormed and came up with ideas for the materials they would use to protect the passenger. Each car was fired at the wall from three distances and teams timed the impact and completed a vehicle velocity worksheet to measure feet per second of the vehicle. Several teams were successful and protected their passenger.

SMS Teams Up With Shaw |

Thanks to Shaw Industries, Sonoraville Middle School recently redecorated the front entryway with new carpet! Former SMS student Jon McEntyre, now Shaw employee, oversaw the project. Mr. Allen Bowen, SMS principal, was looking to recover the area with new carpet and learned that Shaw needed a high traffic area to test their new carpet tiles. A perfect match, the new carpet was installed in late July and was ready for the first day of school! Students and parents alike commented on what a great first impression the carpet makes upon entering the school. SMS Administrators chose a red and gray color scheme to match the school colors. Shaw will return to SMS later in the year to see how the tiles are handling the flow of hundreds of pairs of feet every day! SMS and Shaw Industries make one RED HOT team!

SMS 6th Graders Inspired for CRCT |

SMS 6th grade teachers read the story below to their students in the days before the all-important CRCT exam and gave them bracelets to help them remember the motivational message .
Walking On Fire
By Rob Langston
When I was twelve, my father took me to Anthony Robbins' fire walk seminar. I learned that walking on fire is a metaphor for taking charge of your life by changing your belief system. Tony taught us that even seemingly impossible tasks like walking on hot coals could be accomplished by internalizing a new belief. In this case, it was " I can successfully walk on hot coals."
Over the weekend seminar, Mr. Robbins drilled this idea into our subconscious minds until we actually believed it. Then he modeled that it could be done. We demonstrated that we had learned our lesson well by doing the impossible, walking on hot coals without being burned. I walked on fire! The seemingly impossible was now possible. More importantly, I gained knowledge, experience and courage to tackle task that had seemed beyond me only months earlier.
Students were given bracelets to wear during CRCT testing and remember Rob's story of defeating the fire walk. Their caring and motivating teachers wanted them to know, most Importantly, for the bracelet to be a reminder that they have the knowledge, experience and courage to tackle this great task. The seemingly impossible is NOW POSSIBLE! WE ARE RED HOT!

SMS 6th Graders Get Their “Game On!” |

Mrs. Seiz's 6th grade ELA classes recently completed technical writing projects and students really got their "game on". They read a common fairy tale and then worked in small groups to create a game based on the story read.
The project requirements were: • Each game must be directly related to the story • Contain game pieces • Have a scoring method • Be neatly created and contained within a folder • Each game must also include a brochure with student-written directions for how to play the game. • Once the game and instructions are complete, students play it to test their instructions. • Students then rotate through the room, playing all the games and leaving constructive comments at each. • After discussing the results, each group has a chance to revise their game and/or instructions.
The students worked diligently for two days creating their fairy tale games. Writing technical instructions for how to play each game was challenging, but each group proved their RED HOT abilities. The games exceeded Mrs. Seiz's expectations and the students are still raving about their creations!

SMS Universal Robots Team |

Engineering & Technology Standards
ENGR-EET-4: Students will demonstrate an understanding for a technological world through hands-on projects.
A) Apply the engineering design process
B) Use and maintain technological products and systems
ENGR-II-6: Students will develop leadership skills and work ethics.
A) Demonstrate work ethics within the classroom and lab environment
B) Investigate leadership skills through co-curricular activities
The SMS Universal Robotics team meets after school on Thursdays to explore robotics engineering and to have some fun, too. Student teams construct robots with Innovation First tools and materials. Teams apply the engineering design process, problem solving strategies and creative thinking in preparing the robot's task. Using programming software and sensors, students create programs that allow the robots to operate autonomously. These students work hard to make these robots perform and are constantly seeking ways to improve that performance and robot functions. These future engineers can also to be found most mornings before school working with their robots in the Engineering & Technology lab. They enjoy showing off their skills and abilities to fellow students. This year's team is small but very dedicated. Next year we hope to expand our program so that more students can participate. We are also planning on entering at least one robotic competition.

SMS is Proud to Announce Teacher and Staff Members of the Month! |
Mrs. Rachel Carter has been the Media Specialist at SMS for 10 years. Before that, she taught 1st grade at Swain Elementary for 2 years. She is a Calhoun native and graduated from Gordon Central High School. She received her B.S. from Kennesaw State University in Early Childhood Ed, her M.Ed. from State University of West Georgia, and recently completed her Ed.S. degree from Lesley University in 2009. Mrs. Carter didn't set out to be a teacher. She says, "I thought I wanted to be in business. After running out of core classes at Kennesaw State, I finally took an education class and fell in love. I knew from that first class that I had found my calling. Working with children is tough work, but so rewarding. I've always loved reading and books and I thought that Media Education was a natural fit. I believe being the Media Specialist is the best job in the school. I have the honor of working with and getting to know everyone and the joy of seeing all the students, not just one class. Encouraging the love of reading is my favorite job responsibility. I truly love my job!"
Mrs. Kim Coots is the Guidance Secretary at SMS. She grew up in Norcross and moved to the Calhoun area 5 years ago to live on the farm she and her family always wanted. She chose a career in education to help impact children in a positive way. She is married to Joe Coots and they have 2 boys. The Coots family has horses and love to go trail riding every chance they get. If Mrs. Coots is not at the barn then you will usually find her at the ball field or some sporting event with her boys. Her family also competes in Traditional Archery Tournaments all over the southeast. The Coots have been members of Souls Harvest Church Ministries on Hwy 53 for the last 4 years.
SMS is proud of these two ladies and the wonderful job they do for our students. We are RED HOT!

SMS Wins GRAD Attendance Bowl for January |

The GRAD program (Get Ready, Achieve, and Dream) is a collaborative group that developed from a Family Connection committee focusing on school achievement. One of the main events sponsored by GRAD each year is a rotating attendance bowl. Each year the schools in both the county and the city system compete monthly for the attendance bowl. Schools submit their attendance rate each month to GRAD and if they have the highest percentage they get to maintain the attendance bowl trophy at their school throughout the following month. The school that wins the most times throughout the year wins the bowl to keep. The idea of the attendance bowl- however simple, reminds students, staff, and the community the importance of being in school.
Sonoraville Middle won the attendance bowl for having 96.3% attendance for the month of January 2010. Pictured with the bowl are Mrs. Kim Coots, attendance secretary; and Mrs. Kelly Gentry, Family Advocate.

Effort Matters at SMS |

One afternoon last fall, Ms. Debra Warren, SMS Math Coach, was reading an educational article about the differences in student achievement. The article compared two groups of students who were taking the same classes and performed academically at about the same level. One of the groups was able to out perform the other on assessments and the difference was the amount of EFFORT put forth by the students. Ms. Warren brought the article to the attention of Mr. Bowen and Mr. Donnie Hudgens, 6th grade math teacher. Mr. Hudgens began using "Effort Matters" slogans in his classroom and during instruction. He noticed an immediate improvement. Since then, everyone at SMS has adopted the motto of "Effort Matters!" While we stress the importance of learning and accountability, what can sometimes make the most difference is EFFORT. Parents who attended winter open house heard Mr. Hudgens speak about Effort Matters, and students see and hear the slogans around campus. No matter how big or small, EFFORT MATTERS at SMS!

7th Graders Give a “Hoot” about Science! |

SMS 7th graders in science class completed their studies on animals and digestion by dissecting owl pellets. While you and I may be disgusted by this experience, 7th graders know that owl pellets are actually the regurgitated indigestible parts of the owl's prey. They often contain teeth, bones, fur, and feathers. Once the pellets are collected and cleaned, and are ready for 7th graders to discover! After dissection, students assembled complete skeletons of the owl's meal and hung them in the halls for display.
