    Happy New Year from Gordon County Schools!  

    I hope that you have enjoyed a relaxing, healthy holiday season with family and friends.  As we enter a New Year and a new semester with our students, know that I continue to work closely with our local health and emergency officials to monitor developments and conditions in our county regarding COVID-19 and there is overall support among healthcare, community, and school officials regarding our safe return to school welcoming students as scheduled on January 6.

    Decisions concerning the safety and wellbeing of our staff and students are not made lightly, and we take into consideration all the factors that impact our families. We continue to remind anyone who has tested positive and is still under quarantine or continues experiencing symptoms, those students who are under a medical quarantine due to exposure, and those who have COVID-related symptoms of any kind to stay home until those symptoms have passed, the quarantine period has expired and/or there is proof of a negative test. In addition, those who have been tested for the virus and are awaiting the results should remain home until the results are received and appropriate measures are taken. 

    I would also like to remind everyone of the importance of practicing mitigation measures such as washing hands, social distancing, and wearing face coverings.

    Given an increased number of positive COVID cases resulting in a larger than normal number of quarantines in our schools over the last several days, Gordon County Schools has made the decision to begin the holiday break sooner than scheduled. Elementary and middle school students, as well as high school students who are exempt from final exams will have their last day of classes for the semester tomorrow, Tuesday, December 15. This will also be the last day of the semester for all elementary after school care programs. High school students who need to complete final exams will do so on Wednesday, December 16. Schools will provide additional school-level details, as necessary. All staff should plan to report on schedule for the remainder of the week.

    As we complete our first semester and look forward to a time of celebration, please continue to practice mitigating measures such as maintaining social distancing, washing hands and staying home when not feeling well, throughout the holiday season. We look forward to a healthy start to the new year when we welcome students back to school on January 6.


    Gordon County Schools has found it necessary to move to hybrid instructional model, as outlined in the district’s Back to School guidance in August, for both Gordon Central High School and Sonoraville High School beginning Monday, October 19.  The tentative return date to full-time, in-person instruction will be Monday, November 30, 2020. 


    The decision to temporarily move to a hybrid schedule for both Gordon County high schools is a precautionary measure and comes following an increase in active COVID cases, resulting in a higher number of precautionary quarantines. Currently, there are seven (7) positive student cases at Gordon Central and eleven (11) students who are under quarantine from Sonoraville High School because they have tested positive for COVID-19.  


    Gordon County Schools continues to carefully monitor the active cases that impact schools.  According to the Department of Public Health, the seven-day average of new cases reported increased 4.3% statewide; however, the seven-day average is down 66% state-wide from the peak on July 24.  Gordon County is not labeled by the DPH as having high-transmission indicators at this time.


    During this change in the instructional delivery model, all high school students will continue to receive instruction from their assigned classroom teachers utilizing Schoology but will only attend school in-person every other week, based upon the student’s last name.  Having only half of the students in class at one time will allow for additional distancing among students within the classroom. Faculty and staff will work to prepare for this transition on Friday, October 16, and school will be closed to students.  From Monday, October 19 through Friday, October 23, all high school students will have one week of online learning through Schoology.  This will allow adequate time for facilities to receive extra disinfecting and sanitation and for teachers to plan for hybrid instruction.


    Beginning Monday, October 26, students whose last names begin with the letters A-K will attend school for in-person instruction for one week, and students whose last names begin with the letters L-Z will complete lessons online through Schoology.  The week of Monday, November 2, students whose last names begin with the letters L-Z will attend school in person, and those with last names beginning with A-K will complete lessons online.  This pattern will continue until Thanksgiving break according to the following schedule:

    August 18 message- Temporary Closure of Gordon Central High School

    Gordon County Schools has found it necessary to temporarily close Gordon Central High School to in-person instruction, effective tomorrow, August 19, 2020.  The tentative return date for in-person instruction will be September 2, 2020. 

    The decision to temporarily close Gordon Central High School is not due to a high number of active cases. Currently, there are four (4) faculty members and one (1) student who have tested positive for COVID-19 at Gordon Central High School. The closure is due to the number of staff members at Gordon Central High School who, under current DPH guidelines, are being required to participate in a precautionary quarantine.  At this time, finding coverage for the high number of teachers who will not be able to teach from their classrooms during the quarantine period is not in the best interest of the school or its students.

    During this temporary closure, Gordon Central High School students will continue to receive instruction from their assigned classroom teachers utilizing Schoology.  Faculty and staff will work to prepare these lessons on Thursday, August 20 and Friday, August 21.  Schoology lessons will be available for Gordon Central High School students beginning Monday, August 24.  Details will be sent from the school in the coming days. 

    As a precaution, additional cleaning will take place throughout the school on Wednesday, August 19, and only limited staff will be in the building. Extracurricular activities will continue, unless otherwise notified by the school. 

    This closure does not impact any other Gordon County School, and all other schools will operate as normal.

    August 14 message- Welcome Back and Updates 

    Good afternoon Gordon County Schools families,

    I would like to take the opportunity to thank everyone for a great start to school.  It has been wonderful to see all of our students back in our schools, and I know that our students who are learning through our virtual at-home learning program are excited about getting started with a new school year as well.  Thank you all for your patience as we learn a new way of educating our students. 

    I also wanted to address something that I know has been on the minds of many of our families as they send their children back to in-person instruction- the state of public health in our schools.  Gordon County Schools is actively monitoring student and staff health in our schools and will report every Friday the updated total number of COVID-19 positive cases in our schools on our webpage at under the updated counts tab.

    Throughout the school year, we will notify students’ parents and guardians and employees according to our protocol outlined in our Infectious Disease Plan. If a student’s exposure to a student or employee who has tested positive meets the Department of Health’s requirements for mandated precautionary quarantine, parents/guardians will be immediately advised; the same notification will be made to employees who meet these requirements.  A precautionary quarantine does not mean that the employee or student being asked to quarantine is sick or will become sick but is a Department of Public Health-mandated practice to best ensure the safety of the student or employee, as well as those teaching and learning around them.

    Students and staff who have tested positive for COVID-19 or who have recently had close contact with a person with COVID-19 must not return to school until they meet the Department of Public Health’s Return to School Guidance After COVID-19 Illness or Exposure.

    Additionally, students and staff must not come to school with a fever of 100.4 or higher and must not come to school until they have been fever-free, without the use of fever-reducing medication, for at least 24 hours.  For more information on this process, please visit our frequently asked questions section on our reporting page.

    Currently, Gordon County Schools (GCS) is busy planning for a safe reopening of schools on August 12. Our intent is to welcome back all students, Pre-K through 12th grade, on a traditional, in-person Monday through Friday schedule, with prevention protocols in place that follow health and safety guidelines outlined by the Department of Public Health and CDC. Protocols and procedures for opening may change as we continue to receive information from state and local officials and monitor data on the community spread of COVID-19 in our area.


    Recently, the Georgia Department of Education released a document entitled “Georgia’s Path to Recovery for K-12 Schools”, which outlines guidance for reopening schools based upon three levels of spread for the virus – green indicates little to no spread, yellow is minimal to moderate spread, and red is substantial spread. Community spread levels will be determined by Department of Public Health officials and will be based upon our community’s specific data.  For further information and details of this guidance, please visit

    When the GCS community is in the green or yellow levels, Gordon County Schools plans to operate on a traditional schedule with modifications for health and safety, including limiting visitors to schools, providing additional distancing to the extent feasible and practical, practicing heightened cleaning protocols, and making hand sanitizer available. Upon returning to school, face coverings/masks may be worn but are not required at this time. Additionally, bus transportation will be offered for students attending school in-person, and the school system will provide information regarding health and safety when riding the bus. The After School Program will also be offered at all of our elementary schools, with protocols for prevention in place.  School meals (breakfast and lunch) will be offered to students while attending school for in-person instruction.


    The in-person instructional setting may require modifications at certain points throughout the year if there is a resurgence of the virus based on Department of Public Health and CDC information. This could be on a school-by-school basis or system-wide, if the number of cases rises to a level that affects school operations.

    Dependent upon the severity of the spread, there may be a need for a temporary modified schedule to limit the number of students on campus each day. If this becomes necessary, it would affect grades 6 – 12 and allow for students to receive intermittent face-to face instruction, while significantly reducing the number of students in classrooms and allowing more social distancing. Pre-K through 5th grade should be on campus every day, unless the GCS community enters a substantial spread situation (red) that would require school closure for all. However, under these circumstances, elementary students will see additional modifications in the school building to allow for fewer transitions and more social distancing among students.


    Because we realize each family will face different concerns and challenges when school resumes on August 12, GCS also plans to offer a full-time, at-home virtual option for the 2020-21 school year. Students will be provided with a school-system iPad.  However, this option requires the student to have consistent, reliable access to the internet. GCS is exploring a variety of models for full-time virtual learning. The number of students requesting full-time virtual school at different grade levels will determine which model is chosen. ​The model developed and implemented may be a combination of a virtual platform with GCS teacher support or solely a virtual platform. Families should also understand that the choice to pursue at-home virtual learning requires a commitment to the program for a specified amount of time.  Elementary students will have the option to return to in-person instruction after completing 9 weeks of full-time at-home learning, and middle and high school may return after one semester.  Please note that gifted and Advanced Placement courses may not be offered virtually, and students who wish to participate in extracurricular activities/athletics should not choose the virtual at-home learning option.  

    The new version of virtual at-home learning will be refined from what families experienced during our recent school closures. If the virtual at-home option is chosen, attendance and student online engagement will be recorded, assignments will be graded, and grading practices appropriate for a full-time virtual classroom will be utilized. ​Additionally, parents/guardians and students who choose this option will be required to participate in a virtual school orientation session.


    Before selecting the at-home virtual option, families should consider the child’s study habits and motivation, learning support at home, and other factors that may impact his or her success with virtual learning.  For continued planning, GCS is asking families to state their intent regarding enrollment in at-home virtual learning for the coming school year.  A link to apply for at-home virtual learning will be sent to GCS families and posted to our website on July 6.  Any currently enrolled student who has not indicated intent to participate in the at-home virtual learning option by noon on July 13 will be considered a traditionally-enrolled student who plans to attend school in-person beginning August 12.

    JUNE 24 MESSAGE- Leaders Meet to Discuss the Reopening of Schools

    Local leaders met on Wednesday to discuss the safe return of students planned for August 12th.  School Board chairs Charlie Walraven and Eddie Reeves, along with Superintendents Dr. Kim Fraker and Dr. Michele Taylor hosted the meeting with several local leaders attending.  Courtney Taylor, the Director of Gordon County's Emergency Management updated the group on the work of the local Covid 19 Task Force.  Garrett Nudd, President of AdventHealth Gordon Foundation and Director of Marketing and Communications, introduced AdventHealth's new CEO, Michael Murrill to the team.  Nudd and Murrill shared what they were seeing as health providers to the Calhoun, Gordon County community.  Law enforcement also weighed in on how they could assist both school districts in the re-opening of schools.  City of Calhoun Chief Tony Pyle and City of Fairmount's Interim Chief  Will Regan offered a great deal of assistance with their suggestions for student safety as we prepare for the re-opening of school campuses.  Calhoun City Schools and Gordon County Schools are appreciative of the support of the local Covid 19 Task Force and this team in planning for the start of the 2020-2021 school year.  "We look forward to opening all of our schools on Wednesday, August 12, 2020," stated Dr. Kim Fraker and Dr. Michele Taylor.  "With added safety and preventative measures, we believe we will have a successful re-entry into the schools.  Additional information will be provided to all of our students, staff and parents in the coming weeks," they shared.


    Gordon County Schools was notified on the afternoon of Monday, April 27 that one of our School Nutrition Program staff members recently tested positive for COVID-19. The employee was preparing meals at Sonoraville High School on April 20 and has not worked with the program since that date.  The employee is at home recuperating. Our thoughts and prayers are with our staff member for a complete recovery.  Following CDC guidelines, staff members who worked with the employee have been notified.

    Though not required under Department of Public Health guidelines, we have made the decision to temporarily close the kitchen at Sonoraville High School to support our staff members and allow for additional cleaning and disinfecting. Due to the shutdown of the kitchen, there will be no meals provided for the remainder of the week (Thursday and Friday) out of Sonoraville High School or mobile sites served from the Sonoraville High School kitchen. Meals will only be distributed at Gordon Central High School and mobile sites serviced by the Gordon Central High School kitchen. Those who normally receive meals from Sonoraville High School are welcome to go to Gordon Central High School on Thursday to pick up meals for Thursday and Friday.  We plan to reopen all sites the week of May 4.

    Our School Nutrition Program had already taken many precautions to mitigate the spread of the virus by following guidance from the Centers for Disease Control, Georgia Department of Public Health, and the Gordon County Health Department. This has included self-reporting when symptoms occur, wearing gloves during food prep and distribution, use of masks or face coverings, limiting the number of employees in the kitchen and prep areas, and practicing social distancing among staff and the public. To further help promote public wellness, meal distribution was reduced from daily to two days a week beginning April 13.  

    Gordon County Schools is committed to providing food for families while promoting public health and safety. Therefore, we are taking further actions to protect all of those involved in the meal service program.  Starting Thursday, April 30, school nurses will be on hand to screen all of those working in the meal service program.  Additionally, we are continuing to monitor guidance from national, state and local health organizations, and will make adjustments accordingly while striving to maintain meal distribution service for those in need.

    Our current school meal program will end on May 22, and our summer meal service will begin June 1 and run through July 31, with no service the week of June 29-July 3.


    Dear Parent/Guardian,

    The closing of schools to in-person instruction due to the COVID-19 pandemic has certainly created an unexpected and somewhat sad ending to our current school year. I think we all will be grieving this abrupt ending in some way, which is only natural. While we are all disappointed, we are also in a unique position to continue to positively impact the lives of our students through our continued offering of at-home learning. It is the intention of the Gordon County School System that we provide, to the best of our ability, a meaningful educational experience through at-home learning for all students, including students with disabilities, English language learners, and those without internet access.

    As our schools will remain closed to in-person instruction through the remainder of the school year, our teachers continue to create meaningful distance learning opportunities electronically, as well as paper materials, as needed. Individual schools will communicate with families regarding accessing new material and submitting completed work for the remainder of the semester. I am so thankful for the dedication of our parents and other caregivers to ensuring that our students continue academic work during this time. I know doing this puts another responsibility on our families that no one was prepared to handle. With all of this in mind, we created an adjusted timeline for completion of course work and a framework for grading so that no child’s grade is negatively impacted by the COVID-19 crisis and our school closure. Details are outlined below.

    Submitting Completed Work:

    While we continue to operate within the CDC guidelines and those outlined in the most recent Executive Order by the Governor, please remember the preference for receiving, completing, and submitting student work is electronically through Schoology, DoJo, Remind, etc. Students who received a paper packet to complete are asked to send the completed work to the teacher via email or text message, if at all possible. Students who have no way of submitting completed work electronically will be provided directions for submitting work by their local school.

    Continuing At-Home Learning:

    Teachers continue providing instruction/activities Monday-Thursday (using Friday for review/ make-up work).

    Teachers will grade assignments and provide feedback to students.

    All Georgia Milestones Assessments (End of Grade/End of Course) have been cancelled and requirements for completing them have been waived. There will be no final exams.

    At the end of the year, it is our intention that students will be promoted to the next grade, unless the student is significantly behind and a meeting has already been held with the parents to discuss the topic of retention. Each student must attempt the at-home learning assignments and complete them to the best of his/her ability. Failure to submit work for grading may result in a final grade of “Incomplete” for the course, and the student may be required to participate in additional remediation once in-person instruction begins for the 2020-2021 school year. At the beginning of the 2020-2021 school year, each school with the support of the system staff, will spend time addressing learning gaps and individual student needs.


    May 5th: Teachers will stop delivering new content.

    May 6th –8th: Students will submit any remaining completed work. Students who are behind or need additional time will continue working with their teacher(s) and may submit work through May 15.

    May 6th –22nd: Teachers will grade student work, review reports, remediate those failing, and post grades. Virtual year end and student recognition celebrations will be held May 18 – 22.

    Grading: Student work for the last nine weeks (all work after March 12) will be used to enhance the student’s grade, not be used as a punitive measure.

    Elementary K-2

    Elementary 3-5



    K-2 students will receive a standards-based report card. Any standard without evidence will not be evaluated.

    K-2 grading is a reflection of the student’s mastery of standards to prepare for instruction/remediation for the 20-21 school year.



    Grades 3-5 will receive an average of the first three nine weeks. Work submitted the last nine weeks will supplement the average. No child will receive a numeric grade lower than the average of the first three nine weeks.**


    Grades 6-8 will receive an average of the first three nine weeks. Work submitted the last nine weeks will supplement the average. No child will receive a numeric grade lower than the average of the first three nine weeks.**


    Nine weeks Connections classes will receive a final grade of Pass or Incomplete based on the student’s work.

    The course averages a student had on March 12th at the nine weeks is the lowest numeric grade the student can receive.**

    Dual Enrollment courses will be governed by the affiliated College or University.

    In compliance with Governor Kemp’s executive order issued this afternoon, Gordon County Schools will remain closed to in-person instruction for the remainder of the 2019-2020 school year.  School system officials are working to outline a framework for instruction for the remainder of the school year, and further guidance will be shared after spring break.  

    Plans for rescheduling special events will also be announced at a later date. We are extremely saddened for our seniors, and we know how important graduation ceremonies and other events are for them and their families.  Please know that we will make every effort to reschedule these events once it is safe to do so.

    Gordon County Schools will continue its meal service to students after Spring Break, serving five breakfasts and five lunches per student each week. However, deliveries will be made only twice a week to limit person-to-person contact as much as possible.  A new schedule for deliveries will be posted soon.  Additionally, a supply of shelf-stable items will be made available this week to families in need for use during spring break.

    Please also note that the Governor has issued a state-wide shelter-in-place order.  We encourage all of our families to adhere to the order and continue to practice strict social-distancing, as well as other CDC guidelines, such as frequent handwashing, recommended for preventing the spread of the virus.

    This is not the end-of-the-year we wanted or expected for our students, but we will continue to work through this to make the best of the situation at hand.  As we embark on spring break next week, we encourage each of our students, staff members, and families to enjoy a much-needed time of relaxation as we prepare for the coming weeks.  



    Following Governor Kemp’s announcement today that schools across Georgia will remain closed through April 24, 2020, Gordon County Schools has made the following decisions to ensure we are acting in the best interest of our students and families:

    • Schools will remain closed through April 24. Students would return to school on April 27.
    • Both Gordon Central High School and Sonoraville High School will postpone proms.  A new date will be announced at a later time.
    • Gordon County Schools will continue to offer our meal program to include 5 lunches and 5 breakfasts each week.  However, after Spring Break there will be some modifications that will allow us to limit person-to-person contact. More details will be announced next week.
    • At-home and online work will be extended through the duration of the closure.  As a reminder, the preference is that all students receive this work online; however, schools will continue to provide work for students who do not have reliable Internet at home.

    Gordon County Schools continues to be grateful to our community for the support of our schools throughout this constantly evolving situation.  We applaud our families for the job they are doing in assisting our students with at-home learning and our teachers for doing a tremendous job of continuing to provide learning opportunities for their students.  Our maintenance staff is working hard to ensure buildings are safe and ready for our students to return, and our nutrition and transportation staffs are working with our numerous employee volunteers each day to ensure our students are fed.  We are also thankful for our technology department for keeping our online learning platforms up and running and providing technical support, while our administrators and support staff have been working tirelessly to ensure everyone’s needs are met. 

    We miss our students, and we cannot wait to welcome them all back to school when this crisis has passed. Until then, thank you all for your patience and support.  We will get through this together!


    As the COVID-19 situation continues to evolve, we take seriously our role in supporting the CDC, state and local health officials and government leaders as they work to contain the virus. To demonstrate our support of efforts to contain the spread of the coronavirus, we are making an operational change in the way we handle the distribution and receiving of student work during this period of at-home learning by limiting person-to-person contact.

    The preference for receiving, completing, and submitting student work is online as provided by our teachers through Schoology, DoJo, Remind, etc. If you received a paper packet to complete and need to submit that work for grading, we ask that the work be sent to the teacher via email or text message, if at all possible. This can be accomplished by taking photos or scanning the work to attach in an email or text message. If you have no way of submitting completed work electronically, please save the work to be submitted to the school at a later time. If you have no way to access new assignments electronically, please contact your teacher to make arrangements to receive packets. Some schools will mail information, while others may offer a pickup time. Paper packets should be a last resort as we are working to limit person-to-person contact at this time.

    During this unprecedented time, please know we are committed to providing quality at-home learning opportunities for all students, as well as meals for students while maintaining a commitment to the health and wellbeing of our system administrators, teachers, and support staff. We believe these changes will allow us to continue providing ongoing educational opportunities and nourishment while maintaining the safety of staff and our families.

    Please remember the best defense against the virus is to wash your hands and practice social distancing. Thank you for your patience as we navigate through the uncharted territories of COVID-19.

    I wanted to take a moment to thank our families for all of your patience and understanding as we have worked through the difficulties of this first week of online learning.   I hope you will agree that our teachers have done a tremendous job of providing instructional materials for our students.  It is our goal to continuously improve the at-home learning experience; therefore, we are implementing a few changes as we move forward.   

    Future student work created by teachers will be provided Monday through Thursday to allow Friday to be a make-up or review day. This should help students with pacing their work and allow teachers time to call families and provide feedback to students as needed.  As teachers make regular phone calls to students and families, issues such as missing assignments should be discussed. We understand that families are still adjusting to at-home learning, just as we all are, so we are asking that teachers work with students to make sure they have every opportunity to complete assignments before issuing grades.

    Next week we will be providing our next round of packets to students who do not have consistent access to the internet.  However, we encourage everyone who can possibly complete the lessons online to do so.  If internet connectivity is not consistently available at home but you are able to access email, please provide your child's teacher with an email address where you can receive assignments.  We want to make every effort to avoid students or families from having to leave home to obtain materials to continue instruction from home.  Principals will work with teachers to ensure printed packets are available to be picked up as a final option for families who have no other way of getting the materials.  The dates and times of availability of these packets will be posted next week.  

    Please know that we understand this is a difficult and challenging time.  We know you miss seeing our students, and you are trying to learn a new way of working each day.  Like me, many of you are concerned for our students who are missing milestone moments because of our closures- performances, games, competitions – which have been canceled through Spring Break. Many more are wondering about other events such as proms and graduations should there be any further extensions of our closure.   Please know that, while we do not know exactly what the next several weeks will bring, we do want to preserve and protect as many special events as possible.

    In consideration of Governor Kemp’s executive order issued on March 16, as well as the latest guidance from the CDC, Calhoun City and Gordon County Schools will remain closed through spring break, which ends on April 10. Teachers will make contact with students in order to continue instructional activities through April 3. No assignments will be given the week of spring break.     Thank you for your cooperation as we work through the logistics centered around our extended closures in response to our current community health concern. While campuses are closed to students, we will continue to clean and disinfect campuses and busses, respond to emails and phone calls, provide academic activities for students via online learning and continue to update our stakeholders on COVID-19. 

    Please see the information below to assist you in preparing for the next couple of weeks: 

    Personal items, medications, student work packets, and student devices can be picked up at the student’s school during the following times:

    • Monday, March 16*
      • 7:30 a.m. – 6:30 p.m.


    • Tuesday, March 17
      • 7 a.m.-9 a.m.
      • 11 a.m.-1 p.m.
      • 5 p.m. – 7 p.m.
    • Wednesday, March 18
      • 7 a.m.-9 a.m.
      • 11 a.m.-1 p.m.
      • 5 p.m. – 7 p.m.

    * PLEASE NOTE: If no one is available to pick up items for students during the posted times, please call the school to make other arrangements.


    We will provide instructional activities through online learning and will make hard copies available to students as needed. Families should plan to contact their child’s school to obtain hard copies of assignments or to pick up devices for student use. Other information will be provided to students through Schoology, the district’s learning management system. For detailed information on how to access Schoology, see the Gordon County Schools Online Learning Resource Document or visit our website at Teachers will be available through the online resources available to students and will hold online office hours, as advertised. The expectation is that students will stay current in completing assignments. If a student has an extenuating circumstance that will prevent him/her from meeting this expectation, families need to contact the teacher or school for guidance.




    During the closure, consideration will be given to special education students by providing opportunities for students with disabilities to have equal access to the continuing education program and receive educational benefits that are comparable to those received by general education students.  Special Education students will receive support through phone contacts with teachers, digital learning and packets that are appropriate for their learning.   Instructional videos, phone tutoring, and video chatting may also be provided to support our students.   If your child has an IEP due during the closure, you will be contacted by your child's teacher to set up a phone meeting so that you may have an opportunity to take part in their annual review.

    For families who are planning to turn in packets for PreK registration for the 20-21 school year, the deadline will be extended to accommodate our school closings.  As soon as a new deadline has been established, we will post the information to our website and social media.

    MARCH 13, 2020

    Due to the latest information from Governor Kemp concerning the Coronavirus, Calhoun City and Gordon County Schools are proactively closing school campuses for all students for a two week period through Friday, March 27, 2020.  Instruction will continue through homebound activities that will be shared with all students and parents on Monday, March 16th. This measure is to support local and statewide efforts to slow the spread of COVID-19. 

    Calhoun and Gordon County will reassess the situation on Thursday, March 26th and determine if additional time is needed beyond this date.  Information will be shared through emails, phone calls, district websites, and social media.

    A professional learning day for faculty and staff is planned for Monday, March 16, 2020, at which time, teachers will continue to prepare learning packets and digital learning activities. Digital learning days will begin Tuesday, March 17, 2020.

    Details about school nutrition services will be communicated as soon as possible.

    All school special events scheduled between now and April 13th will be canceled and/or postponed.  This includes parent-teacher conferences, musicals, concerts, etc. Upon students’ return to school, we are asking that visitors respect our desire to keep our students and staff safe and refrain from coming to school for lunch or other daily events within the school until further notice. 

    All field trips, both in-state and out-of-state, are suspended through April 13th.  Details on rescheduling or refunds will be made available to you as soon as they are determined.  

    All athletic practices and games are suspended through March 27th and will be re-evaluated at that time in cooperation with the Georgia High School Association and Middle School Athletic Associations.

    Gordon County Schools participated today in a conference call with Governor Brian Kemp and his office, State School Superintendent Richard Woods and Department of Education staff, and the Department of Public Health officials.  We are also aware of the case involving a Floyd County Schools' employee that was reported earlier today.  As we continue to monitor the global situation and those in neighboring counties, Gordon County Schools remains unaware of any confirmed cases of COVID-19 among our staff or students.  
    Following DPH guidance, we will continue to take all of our standard precautionary measures to combat the spread of COVID-19 in our schools and community.  These measures include, but are not limited to, sanitizing all areas of our facilities and busses on a routine basis and encouraging students and staff to ensure they are following standard healthcare precautions: staying home when sick, washing hands frequently, sneezing or coughing into tissue or bend of the arm, staying away from others who are sick, etc.   
    Additionally, we are monitoring attendance daily and will report to the Department of Health should we see a significant increase in illness-related absences of either staff or students.  We are also looking at field trips to ensure students who may be traveling on a school-sanctioned trip are not visiting areas of concern.  Families attempting to enroll or reenroll a student who has recently been in an area with a Level 3 or 4 Travel Health Notice advisory for COVID-19, as identified by the CDC, should contact via phone and/or email their local school for instructions related to registration.  

    As this rapidly-changing situation continues to evolve, Gordon County Schools may begin to see additional changes to the school setting, which could take effect at any time.  Some examples of these changes may include limiting visitors to school campuses and/or rescheduling field trips and large gatherings.  We ask that families stay prepared and be flexible with any changes that may occur.

    Dear Parents/Guardians/Staff:

    We understand that there is a great deal of concern about the spread of the COVID-19 virus, and we wanted to take the opportunity to reassure our families that Gordon County Schools is closely monitoring the situation and is in frequent contact with Department of Public Health officials for updates to ensure we have the latest and most accurate information.  

    In the latest information received today from DPH, Governor Kemp reiterated that, “To prevent the spread of incomplete or inaccurate information, we encourage Georgians to rely on guidance from the CDC, the DPH, and my office.     As a school system, we continue to take precautions in our schools to help keep our children safe.  Our custodial staff is regularly cleaning and disinfecting work and play areas throughout our facilities, following the suggested protocols from the Department of Public Health.  Our transportation department is also cleaning and disinfecting busses.

    As you probably are aware, there is concern across the globe as to the significance of the COVID-19 (Coronavirus) and its potential impact on the population. Like systems across the nation, Gordon County Schools is monitoring the evolution of the virus and its potential impact on our community. The Georgia Department of Public Health (DPH) has provided updated information about the virus, which can be viewed in its entirety on our website at

    While there are no virus cases in Calhoun/Gordon County or surrounding areas, we want to remind you about some ways to protect your family from getting sick and to maintain our healthy learning environments:

    Keep children who are sick at home. Don’t send them to school.
    Teach your children to wash hands a lot with soap and water for 20 seconds. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer. Be sure to set a good example by doing this yourself.
    Make sure children know to avoid touching their eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands.
    Teach your children to cover coughs and sneezes with tissues or by coughing into the inside of the elbow. Be sure to set a good example by doing this yourself.
    Teach your children to stay at least three feet away from people who are sick.
    People who are sick should stay home from work or school and avoid other people until they are better.
    Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces.
    Please know that, as a school district, we work closely with the Department of Public Health and other medical personnel whenever there are potential issues that impact our students and staff. This instance is no different, and we will keep you informed if the situation changes for our community and schools.
