What is a Rube Goldberg Machine?

Rube Goldberg was a Pulitzer Prize winning artist in the 1940s who became famous for his cartoon drawings of very complicated gadgets that were constructed to perform extremely simple tasks. These "Rube Goldberg Machines" typically completed the simple task through a series of "steps" in indirect, convoluted ways.
