• The Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) is a standardized test administered by the College Board and cosponsored by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC).  Students register for the exam through the GCHS counseling office.  The test is composed of four sections: two Math Sections, Critical Reading, and Writing Skills; and takes two hours and forty-five minutes to complete.  The test is mostly multiple-choice, but there are four grid-in math questions at the end of each math section that require takers to enter their responses on a grid.

The Georgia Department of Education provides funds for each 10th grade student to complete the test, and 11th grade students pay only a minimal fee.  The test is usually administered in mid- to late October, and students may register for the test beginning in late August.
