Mrs. Rebecca Owen
I'm Rebecca Owen, and I'm thrilled that your student will be joining us in sixth grade English language arts & reading this year! I believe that young adolescent learners are unique, and at Ashworth, we have a diverse population of students for whom we seek to design instruction and learning environments that uphold this uniqueness and diversity--essentially, communities of learners who write, think, and grow together. When your student enters my classroom, know that he or she will be engaged in reading & writing activities that are designed based upon the current demands of the Georgia Standards for Excellence, as well as current research surrounding middle grades literacy. All students are held to high expectations and are continually guided through the process of growing in both academic skills and skills relevant to middle grades learners. I believe that all students have something to contribute to our school community, and it is my goal to ensure that students are motivated to learn and to achieve as much as they can each day.
I grew up in Cartersville, Georgia and am a 2004 graduate of Cass High School. I'm married to my wonderful husband, Eric, who is also from Cartersville; we are a "House Divided," since he is a Georgia Tech fan and I'm UGA all the way! I have two rescue dogs, Chaco and Mac, and one rescue cat, Scout. When I'm not teaching or coaching, I enjoy reading, running, watching sports, cheering on the Georgia Bulldogs, trying out new recipes, planning future trips, and spending time with friends and family.
Education & Certification
I am currently pursuing a Doctorate in Education in School Improvement from The University of West Georgia. Within this program of study, I am conducting a research study that assesses the relationship between rural young adolescents' achievement motivation and their reading performance. I hope to graduate from this program in Spring 2019. I hold a Specialist of Education degree from The University of Georgia, completed in 2014 in the area of middle grades education. With this degree, I completed my ESOL endorsement. I received my Master of Arts degree in 2011 from Piedmont College, majoring in middle grades language arts. In 2008, I completed my Bachelor of Science in Education at The University of Georgia, with a major in middle grades education and concentrations in language arts and social studies. In conjunction with my formal education, I am also certified in several teaching areas. These include 4-8 ELA, reading, science, and social studies, as well as P-12 ESOL, P-12 reading specialist, and P-12 special education collaborative curriculum.
This is currently my eleventh year in the teaching profession, with all eleven years being served here at Ashworth. I've taught sixth grade reading/language arts for the past ten years, and I previously taught eighth grade language arts and science. I also serve as Ashworth's head track and field coach, and I assistant coach with track and field at Gordon Central.
