Degrees and Certifications:
Mrs. Jane Farist
I graduated from high school in North Carolina in 1986. After graduation, I enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served most of my four-year obligation at the Naval Submarine Base in Kings Bay in southeast Georgia, where I met my husband, Bill, who is from Gordon County. In 1993, we moved back to Gordon County, where I began working at the newly established E-911 center. I worked there until September 1999, when I began working at the newly consolidated E-911 center in Whitfield County in an administrative capacity. While working at the 911 centers, I often had the responsibility for training newly-hired employees. I felt a great sense of accomplishment when those I trained became skilled emergency call handlers and dispatchers.
After nearly 8 years in the 911 business, I decided to return to college and pursue a career in teaching. I graduated from Kennesaw State University in 2005 with a bachelor’s degree in middle grades education and from Piedmont College in July 2011 with a master’s degree in middle grades language arts. In spring 2017, I became certified to teach high school English and was fortunate to be able to remain at Sonoraville High School as a 9th and 10th grade English teacher. This is my fourteenth year teaching – all of these years have been at Sonoraville schools.
Bill and I have been married for almost 30 years and we have 3 children, all of whom are products of Gordon County Schools, graduating from Sonoraville High School: Ethan is a 2013 graduate; Ryan is a 2015 graduate, who will be graduating from UGA in May 2019 (Go Dawgs!); and Catherine is a 2017 graduate who attended one year of Georgia Tech before receiving an appointment to the United States Naval Academy where she is currently a 4th Class Midshipman (Go Navy! Beat Army!). Even though our children no longer attend SHS, we are still enthusiastic Phoenix fans and can often be found cheering on everybody else's at sports and extracurricular events.
I'm excited about the upcoming school year and look forward to helping my students become better readers and writers. Please don't hesitate to contact me with any questions or concerns you may have. You may reach me by e-mail at firstname.lastname@example.org or by phone at 706-602-0320 ext. 2420.
