Mrs. Leslie Hicks

My name is Leslie Hicks. I am a special education teacher. I teach self-contained sixth, seventh, and eighth graders. They are precious students! I am honored to be their teacher!

This is my second year at Ashworth Middle School and in Gordon County. This is such a wonderful place! Everyone here is so nice! You all make coming to work a pleasure!

In my teaching career, I have been lucky enough to work with a wide range of students, in terms of age and cognition.

My teaching experience includes working with the following students: severe-and-profound, high school students; self-contained, high school and middle school students; inclusion, high school students; and special needs, 3-year-old, pre-k students.

Other counties I have worked in besides Gordon include Whitfield and Murray.

I also have years of experience in working with homebound students. They have ranged in age from pre-k all the way up through high school. They have also been special as well as general education students.

In addition, I have worked in summer school (ESY -- Extended School Year) with severe-and-profound students.

I have also worked with adults studying for their GEDs (General Equivalency Diplomas) at GNTC (Georgia Northwestern Techincal College).

I also work nights at Mountain Education Charter High School, housed at North Murray High School, in Chatsworth, in Murray County. There, I teach high school students who are working to obtain their diplomas online.

I am certified to teach most areas of special education, as well as general education English and History. I am also certified in ESOL. I have a specialist degree.

I am also a freelance writer. Since moving to Georgia, I have occasionally written feature articles for local magazines.

I am originally from New York. I moved to Georgia 17 years ago, in order to marry William Hicks, the love of my life! I am very happy to be a Georgia peach! It is so beautiful down here, and the people are so friendly!

I have four children and three grandchildren. My younger grandson was born on my birthday! My family is scattered far and wide! I have one grandchild in Vienna and two in London. Other family members live in New York. Additionally, my son married a Slovenian girl last year! They live in Slovenia!

I believe in keeping busy! I derive great enjoyment from helping out, wherever I am needed.

I enjoy supporting the Miracle League, the group through which special needs athletes play baseball. It is an awesome organization! I urge everyone to become involved!

I am also interested in helping stray animals. I have rescued several. In addition, whenever I see a turtle in the road I stop to rescue it before it gets run over. I would like to either start a rescue group or join an existing group.

My interests also include traveling to see my family or to go to such places as Gatlinburg, shopping (even if I don't buy anything, just to look around is relaxing), walking, driving around and looking at small towns, going to festivals, reading, getting together with friends, and watching reality TV (I like programs such as "International House Hunters." I like to see how people in different countries live.).

That's about it for now. I hope I haven't bored you, my Ashworth family, to tears!

Have a great day!
