Summer Reading Assignment Dear 2024-2025 Ninth Grade Pre-AP Students: Congratulations on your acceptance of the challenges of the Pre-AP Program at Gordon Central High School!! I look forward to meeting each of you and building a relationship that will continue all four years of your high school career! The adventure begins now as we begin our first assignment. This assignment will help prepare you for several courses during your high school career as you learn about mythology and the allusions based on some of the first tales of the world. Choose one of the following memoirs (after discussion with your parents/guardian and reading an online synopsis): A Long Way Gone: Memoirs of a Boy Soldier, Ishmael Beah The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind, William Kamkwamba and Bryan Mealer The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian, Sherman Alexi (mature content) I am Malala, Malala Yousafzai The Education of Little Tree, Forrest Carter Hidden Girl, Shyima Hall Lost Boy, Lost Girl, John Bul Dau and Martha Arual Akech The Girl Who Smiled Beads, Clemantine Wamariya These books are available through any bookstore, library, and many online reading apps. After reading your choice memoir, you will need to complete an AP Major Works Data Sheet. This is something you will be using throughout your tenure as an honors student at Gordon Central, so make it thorough, neat, and legible. This sheet must be handwritten. The data sheet and chart are due HANDWRITTEN on the first day of school, regardless of whether you are in my class first or second semester! I am located in room 337 on the English hall! The first few days of school will be focused on your summer reading. Please be prepared to participate in discussions and complete assessments over your reading! Throughout the semester we will be reading several other works. These will include: To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee The Odyssey, Homer Romeo and Juliet, Shakespeare If you encounter any issues during the summer, do not hesitate to contact me.
