The faculty and staff at Tolbert Elementary School are pleased to present our 2020-2021 Teacher of the Year, Kelly Macks. Kelly was born and raised in Gordon County, Georgia. She graduated from Gordon Central in 1998 and attended college at The University of West Georgia, where she earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Early Childhood Education. She taught second and third grade at Sharp Creek Elementary in Carroll County, Georgia for nine years and was chosen as Teacher of the Year in 2008. Then she taught third and fourth grade at Country Oaks Elementary in LaBelle, Florida for five years. While in Florida, she earned a Reading and ESOL Endorsement. During her time in Florida, Kelly had the honor of being named Hendry County Teacher of the Year 2014-2015. This is her fourth-year teaching first grade at Tolbert Elementary School. While at Tolbert, Mrs. Macks has achieved her Gifted Endorsement. She is currently enrolled at Walden University, where she is diligently seeking a master’s degree in Elementary Reading and Math. It is an honor to have such a hard-working, dedicated teacher who truly cares about her students to represent Tolbert Elementary School.

The following are excerpts written about Mrs. Macks by her peers….

Kelly has a "challenging" class this year, in that her students are working and achieving well-above grade level. Most teachers would probably be satisfied to keep their curriculum the same and let the students stay "above average," but not Kelly. Instead, she implements lessons and activities and uses technology to truly allow her high-achieving students to reach and surpass their potential. She is continually seeking advice on how to push her students and doesn't allow them to settle for just being above-grade-level but helps them move beyond even that. She goes above and beyond to ensure that every student need is addressed.

Kelly works tirelessly to make sure all students are challenged and learning in an exciting way. She makes sure all students feel valued and included. Kelly is well prepared each day to teach the students. She is our grade-level chair and ensures each teacher is informed and has the materials necessary to teach effectively. I feel she represents our school well.

Kelly always goes above and beyond for her students. Kelly strives to make learning fun and engaging for her first-graders every day. She is a positive influence not only for her students but also for her coworkers. She assists other teachers with ideas and strategies to help them in their classrooms. Also, Kelly creates rigorous lessons to challenge her students and push their learning. She is the epitome of a teacher. She loves her students and wants them to succeed.
