Sonoraville Elementary 3rd grade students in Mrs. Land’s class were building both grammar and writing skills during their Writing Workshop.
Mrs. Land wrapped up a mini-lesson on nouns and subjects before students shifted their focus to informative/explanatory writing. Students identified important places in their own lives and used those meaningful connections to help generate ideas for their written piece.
It was a great example of students connecting personal experiences to strengthen their writing!

At the Gordon County Schools Board of Education meeting on Monday, October 19, board members recognized two elementary schools and our School Nutrition Department for outstanding achievements at the state and national levels. These recognitions highlight the dedication of our educators, school leaders, and support staff who continue to make a positive impact on students and families throughout our district.
Sonoraville Elementary School and Tolbert Elementary School were recognized as 2026 Georgia Title I Reward Schools. This prestigious recognition identifies schools among the top 5% of Title I schools in Georgia that have demonstrated the greatest progress in improving academic performance. Schools are selected based on growth in content mastery scores over the two most recent years of statewide assessment data.
Sonoraville Elementary School was represented by Principal Kelly Rampy and Assistant Principal Nicole Burgess. This recognition adds to the school's recent accomplishments, including being named a 2024 Georgia Title I Distinguished School and earning Apple Distinguished School recognition in 2025.
Tolbert Elementary School was represented by Principal Dr. Rebecca Owen and Assistant Principal Melissa Vincent. Tolbert has also celebrated several recent academic achievements, including being named a Georgia Literacy Leader school and receiving Beating the Odds recognition for outstanding achievement and exceptional growth.
The Board also recognized the Gordon County Schools School Nutrition Department for earning the USDA's 2025 Turnip the Beet! Gold Award. This national recognition celebrates summer meal programs that go above and beyond to provide nutritious, appealing, and high-quality meals to children when school is not in session. Gordon County Schools was among 170 summer meal program sponsors nationwide to receive a Turnip the Beet! award and among just 47 programs to earn Gold recognition.
School Nutrition Director Nicole Head shared the importance of the district's summer meal program and recognized several team members whose hard work contributed to this achievement. Those honored included Kim Franks, Summer Meal Coordinator and School Nutrition Operations Specialist; Kristin Cronk and Stacey Lemmermann, Site Managers; and Maria Bruno and Tina Benfield, Site Assistant Managers. Their dedication helps ensure that children throughout our community have access to nutritious meals during the summer months, while maintaining the same quality and care provided throughout the school year.

Kelly Rampy is in her 19th year as an educator and her 4th year as principal of Sonoraville Elementary School. She values the opportunity to make a difference for students, staff, and the community while helping create a school that people are proud to be part of.
Mrs. Rampy believes Sonoraville Elementary is special because of the strong sense of family throughout the school. Along with maintaining high expectations for learning, the school places a strong emphasis on relationships, belonging, and making sure students feel safe and supported. She is proud of the Phoenix spirit across the school and the way students and staff support one another and continue looking for ways to improve.
She is especially proud of the growth she sees in students, both academically and personally. Mrs. Rampy appreciates the way students continue working through challenges, show kindness, and set positive examples for others. She is equally proud of the dedication of the staff and the time and effort they give to students each day.
One message Mrs. Rampy wants every student to understand is that they matter, they belong, and there are people at Sonoraville Elementary who believe in them.

Mrs. Smith modeled the writing process with students as they shared ideas and worked together to create a draft on an anchor chart. The class discussed how the first goal of a rough draft is to get thoughts, reasons, and arguments on paper before worrying about making everything perfect.
It was a great example of students learning that strong writing begins with sharing ideas and building from them. Mrs. Smith was also showing plenty of Phoenix spirit as SES celebrated Homecoming Week!

Gordon County Schools is proud to announce that Sonoraville Elementary School has been recognized by the Georgia Department of Education as a 2026 Title I Reward School.
This prestigious recognition identifies Sonoraville Elementary among the top 5% of Title I schools in Georgia making the most progress in improving the academic performance of all students.
Title I Reward Schools are identified by comparing content mastery scores from the two most recent years of reported data from statewide assessments. Being included among the state’s highest progressing Title I schools reflects the continued focus on student achievement taking place throughout Sonoraville Elementary.
The Georgia Department of Education’s Office of Federal Programs shared that the recognition reflects the commitment and hard work of educators, students, and families. The department also noted that earning the distinction highlights effective teaching and strong school leadership. Title I, Part A provides federal funding to support schools in strengthening academic achievement and helping ensure students have opportunities to meet challenging state academic standards.
The 2026 Title I Reward School designation celebrates the dedication of Sonoraville Elementary’s students, teachers, staff, administrators, and families and their commitment to continued academic growth and student success. As students worked on making inferences in their reading, Mr. Weikum helped break down the phonics of words to support their understanding of new vocabulary. These moments help students connect decoding, word meaning, and comprehension as they grow as readers.
It was a great example of thoughtful instruction helping students build confidence and understanding.
