Swain Elementary School recently received new basketball equipment from the Atlanta Hawks Foundation in partnership with the GoodSports Foundation. Good Sports drives equitable access in youth sports and physical activity, by supporting children in high-need communities to achieve their greatest potential, on the field and in life. Swain recently awarded the grant after the application submitted by Coach Jill Peacock was accepted by the foundation. Examples of the various types of equipment received so far are featured in the picture. Swain will be able to choose equipment from the GoodSports donations catalogue up to 6 times.
GORDON COUNTY SCHOOLS RECEIVES VISION AWARD
(CALHOUN, GEORGIA) – The Georgia Association of Educational Leaders (GAEL) has recognized Gordon County Schools as a recipient of the 2022-2023 GAEL Vision Award. The Vision Award is presented to school districts in five categories based upon their commitment to encouraging and supporting teachers, principals, and district office staff in professional learning. “Learning is a lifelong process. In order for us to do the best for our students, we all must continue to grow professionally. For this reason, Gordon County Schools places an emphasis on professional learning opportunities for all of our staff members," says Dr. Kimberly Fraker, Superintendent. The Vision Award was presented during the GAEL Winter Conference, January 22-24, in Athens.

Point out ways that people use math every day to pay bills, balance their checkbooks, figure out their net earnings, make change, and tip at restaurants. Involve older children in projects that incorporate geometric and algebraic concepts like planting a garden, building a bookshelf, or figuring how long it will take to drive to your family vacation destination.

Due to inclement weather, Gordon County Schools will be delaying student release today, January 12th, by approximately 30 minutes.
The Afterschool Program (ASP) at our elementary schools will operate as normal.

Gordon County Schools officials, in collaboration with local safety officials, are closely monitoring weather conditions expected for this afternoon, January 12th, and will continue to do so throughout the day.
Due to safety concerns from the severe threat of inclement weather, we stand ready to delay today’s dismissal to allow students to remain in a safe location rather than on the road in a car or school bus.
Should an official change of schedule (delay, closing, etc.) be warranted, we will notify staff and families via our website, all social media handles, mass notification system and share information with local media outlets.
As the forecast is calling for extremely heavy rain and windy conditions, we would like to emphasize the need for everyone to remain weather aware and cautious during today’s storms.
Upcoming Registration Dates for Kindergarten:
Registration for upcoming kindergarten students will begin on February 1st and end March 10th. We will share more information as it is given to the school.

Mrs. Lisa, Mrs. Denise and Ms. Jessica's class went to the bowling center for Special Olympic Bowling. We have some great bowlers.
Today our 4th and 5th Grade class spelling bee winners participated in the school spelling bee. After many rounds of spelling, Ian Glass, 5th grader, is our school winner. Congratulations to Ian. We are so proud of you.

FIRE HYDRANT REDESIGN CONTEST: Fourth and fifth grade students across the Gordon County Schools system recently had the opportunity to participate in a fire hydrant redesign coloring contest, hosted by Suzanne Roberts and the Calhoun Downtown Development Authority.
In each of our local elementary schools, students were given the creative freedom to design a fire hydrant! After receiving a ton of entries, a winner was selected at each GCS elementary school.
Each of the six designs will be painted onto fire hydrants in downtown Calhoun by local student artists from Gordon Central High and Sonoraville High.
Thank you to Ms. Suzanne Roberts and the Downtown Development Authority for providing this opportunity for our students!!

The following students were the Classroom Spelling Bee winners for W.L. Swain Elementary.

They will now compete in the School Spelling Bee on November 30th. The winner will move forward to the county Spelling Bee.
