Board Meeting Public Participation

The Gordon County Board of Education welcomes visitors and will hear any interested citizen and/or employee of the school system pursuant to the guidelines outlined. Individuals desiring to appear before the Board must first complete a sign-in sheet which shall be available thirty (30) minutes prior to the meeting. 

  1. Any person concerned with an administrative question should exhaust all administrative channels before presenting to the Superintendent and/or Board.

  2. Any individual desiring to speak is requested to give his/her name, address, and the group, if any, that he/she is representing on a form provided by the system along with other information. The individual should speak to the Board, not to the audience.

  3. The presentation should be as brief as possible, yet include all information considered important by the speaker. Unless an extension of time is granted, each speaker shall not exceed three (3) minutes.

  4. If one (1) spokesman has presented a matter it is not necessary for others to repeat the same ideas. Others speaking on the same subject shall be limited to three (3) additional speakers. There shall be no more than four (4) individuals speaking on the same subject.

  5. Remarks shall end when the speaker’s allotted time has expired;

  6. The Board will not answer any questions during the public participation but only listen to the comments or concerns of an individual or a group.

  7. Persons appearing before the Board are reminded, as a point of information, members of the Board are without authority to act independently as individuals in official matters.

  8. Items that are excluded from the Open Meetings Act will not be discussed during this session. (This includes certain land, legal reference, individual student discipline cases, and personnel items).

  9. No profane and/or vulgar language or personal abuse against any person will be permitted.

The Board vests in its chairman, or the presiding attorney, authority to terminate the remarks of any individual when he/she does not adhere to the rules established.  No action will be taken by the Board during public participation.
