Gordon County Schools is proud to announce that the Georgia State Board of Education has approved the district’s Charter System renewal for a five-year term from 2026 through 2031. This approval allows Gordon County Schools to continue its ongoing work to provide students with meaningful academic opportunities, responsive school-level decision-making, and innovative programs designed to meet local needs.
Throughout the renewal process, Gordon County Schools was recognized for its growth, forward-thinking approach, and commitment to innovation. During the charter renewal interview phase, district leaders shared how charter flexibility has helped schools respond to student needs, expand opportunities, and strengthen programs across the system. The district’s work was also praised when Superintendent Alice Mashburn presented Gordon County Schools’ plan to the Georgia State Board of Education, highlighting the system’s continued focus on student success, school-level governance, and community-centered solutions.
Charter System status gives Gordon County Schools flexibility to make decisions that best serve its students, schools, families, and community while remaining accountable for student achievement, fiscal responsibility, and strong governance. This flexibility allows the district to continue adapting programs, staffing, resources, and supports in ways that reflect the needs of Gordon County students.
A major focus of the renewed charter is the continued growth of the Gordon County College and Career Academy of Design and Advanced Manufacturing. Through partnerships with business, industry, and postsecondary institutions, the College and Career Academy will keep expanding career learning opportunities, workforce pathways, certifications, and dual enrollment options that help prepare students for success beyond graduation.
The renewed charter also allows Gordon County Schools to continue using flexible approaches to address both instructional and operational needs. These include strategies to help reduce bus driver shortages, such as utilizing school-based employees as route drivers and exploring options like stipends, flexible calendars, or salary schedule adjustments.
In the classroom, the district will continue using flexible staffing, funding, and intervention programs to support students in literacy and math. This work includes the use of coaching, Early Intervention Program teachers, and paraprofessional support to help close learning gaps and strengthen academic outcomes.
The charter renewal also reinforces Gordon County Schools’ commitment to advanced learning opportunities. REACH teachers will continue serving gifted students at each of the district’s six elementary schools, supported in part through consolidated funding flexibility. The Bridges Program will also continue helping identify and prepare students for gifted testing at an earlier stage.
School Governance Teams will remain an important part of the district’s Charter System structure. These teams, made up of school and community stakeholders, help support school-level governance by providing input related to personnel, finances, curriculum and instruction, resource allocation, school improvement goals, and school operations.
Overall, the 2026–2031 charter renewal provides Gordon County Schools with an opportunity to build on current progress while continuing to focus on student achievement, workforce readiness, local decision-making, and innovative solutions that support all schools across the district.
Gordon County Schools extends its sincere appreciation to our community, school and district leaders, faculty and staff, and partners in education for helping make innovation possible across our school system. Their support, collaboration, and commitment to students continue to strengthen student success and growth.
