National School Breakfast Week at Belwood is bussin!

This week, T-Rex paid a visit to Belwood for Read Across America. This is the continuation of a year long Literacy Program to bring dinosaurs and paleontologists to life and promote reading in all areas. At the beginning of the year, Principal Monica Holt teamed up with Mr. Terry Allee and his company, You Asked For it! LLC, to create the year long plan. Belwood's theme was dinosaurs, so Mr. Allee created 2 characters, Dr. Robert Elijah Xavier Thornton aka Dr. Bob, a paleontologist, and T-Rex.
Throughout the year, both characters have visited Belwood and created a story for the entire school to be a part of. The story connects many books like the Dinosaurs that Pooped Series and many others to add to the overall story. The Program has included multiple videos with Book Readings and clues to help fill in HOW a T-Rex made his way to Belwood!
Students have made the story their own by finding artifacts around the school, by examining the “dinosaur” poop found near the playground, and reading and researching the role of paleontologists. The ultimate goal is to unite Dr. Bob and the T-Rex and to help get the T-Rex back home, to complete the story.
How that will happen is still unfolding and what the next chapter holds, we will have to wait and see...…
This Program has engaged students in all grades on multiple levels and has created great excitement throughout the school for Literacy by allowing all students to create their own story on their own level.

This week we are celebrating
National School Breakfast Week (NSBW) by having important members of our community come and serve breakfast to our students at Belwood!
Breakfast is very important for kids because it provides energy, nutrients, and brain-boosting fuel, so that they can concentrate on the lessons instead of their rumbling tummies!

Terry And Linda Mathis donated a glider chair to Mr. Muse's classroom to replace one that was broken earlier in the year.
The chair provides in-class sensory support to his students.
We are so thankful to have members of our community who care so much for our students and staff!
Thank you Mr. and Mrs. Mathis!
Belwood is truly blessed ❤️

Today, fifth grade teacher Mrs. Montelongo, along with co-teacher Ms. Hannah Stewart, took advantage of the glorious weather and turned it into an engaging teaching opportunity!
Ms. Monty's class is studying plant classification and learning about vascular and non-vascular plants.
She wanted students to see the different species in the real world to form better connections to the content for a more authentic learning experience!
They got to take pictures of the different plants they saw on their iPads and write about whether or not they were vascular and non-vascular. Students then had to justify their reasoning based on what they have learned so far. They were allowed to use their science journals and notes to help with the assignment!
This is just one example of all the wonderful learning that takes place at Belwood each and every day:)

Dear Belwood families:
You have homework over Winter Break.
Yes, you read that correctly 😂😂!!!
Next week is National Random Acts of Kindness Day (Monday, February 17th).
Belwood is going to create a Kindness Tree in order to promote school wide kindness.
Please be on the lookout for a paper ladybug to come home with your student tomorrow. When he/she demonstrates a random act of kindness, please record it on the ladybug and return it to school to be added to our kindness tree. If you are able, please take a picture also and email to
belwoodphotos@gmail.com
This does not have to stop after the break.
Please continue to demonstrate, encourage and record acts of kindness within your family and community.
And remember, one of the most important characteristics of a kind person is that when they do something for someone, they don't expect anything in return.
Please don't underestimate the power kindness has, as one good deed can ripple out and touch the lives of many.
