Gordon County Schools will run on a regular schedule Tuesday, January 21st, 2025. The National Weather Service has issued an Extreme Cold Warning for North Georgia over the next several days. Our priority is to ensure the safety and well-being of our students waiting at bus stops and staff assisting with drop-off in the mornings. Our Transportation Department will send bus riders additional information via Thrillshare. Note that buses may run slightly later than the normal schedule to allow for extra precautions to keep students warm and safe. Encourage children to dress warmly as they travel to school. Layering helps keep them safe and warm. Indoor recess activities will take place. We will also provide flexibility with arrival times for all students to ensure safe arrivals. We are working closely with local agencies to monitor the weather forecast for potential snow. If conditions require adjustments such as delays, early dismissals, or closures, we will promptly notify you through our communication channels.

During their regularly scheduled January meeting, the Gordon County Schools Board of Education approved several key leadership changes across the district. Dr. Rebecca Owen has been officially named the principal of Tolbert Elementary School after serving as interim principal since November 2024. Dr. Owen previously served as assistant principal at Ashworth Middle School and brings extensive experience to her new role. Her background includes work as an Academic Coach and Instructional Specialist at Rome Middle School, along with 11 years of teaching at Ashworth Middle. Dr. Owen earned her Doctor of Education degree from the University of West Georgia in 2019. Monica Holt, the current principal of Belwood Elementary, will transition to the role of district MTSS, ESOL, and Family Engagement Coordinator in June 2025. Mrs. Holt, a native of Gordon County and an alumnus of Fairmount High School, has served the district since 1994 in a variety of leadership roles. She is in her fourth year as principal of Belwood Elementary, where she has fostered an academically enriching and nurturing environment. In her new role, Mrs. Holt will oversee initiatives designed to support the diverse needs of students and families, ensuring equity, inclusion, and meaningful engagement throughout the district. Rebekah Gilreath has been officially named the assistant principal of Ashworth Middle School after serving in an interim capacity since November 2024. A proud product of Gordon County Schools, Mrs. Gilreath has dedicated 19 years to the district. Her experience includes 12 years as an English Language Arts teacher at Ashworth Middle, followed by roles as Literacy Coach and Instructional Lead Teacher at Red Bud Middle School. Her commitment to the community and her expertise in literacy and instruction make her a valuable asset in her new role. Melissa Vincent has been named the assistant principal of Tolbert Elementary as of December 2024, joining Dr. Owen in leading the school. Mrs. Vincent brings years of experience from her time at Red Bud Elementary, where she served as Lead Special Education Teacher and Instructional Lead Teacher. Her efforts in advancing math and literacy performance and her dedication to student success highlight her readiness to contribute to Tolbert Elementary’s growth. Amy Kinkead has been named the new Instructional Lead Teacher at Red Bud Elementary. Mrs. Kinkead holds an Educational Specialist degree in Teacher Leadership from Georgia College and State University. A member of the Red Bud community for eight years, she previously served as the Lead Special Education Teacher. Due to the current Winter Storm Watch and the forecast of potential snow, ice, and high winds, all Gordon County Schools will be closed on Friday, January 10th, to prioritize the safety of our students, staff, and community. Students will bring home any missing assignments, including work for their reading logs, spelling, vocabulary, or other classwork, to complete if they have not already done so at school. We encourage families to use this time to help students stay on track with their learning. We will continue to monitor weather and road conditions closely and will update families promptly about any further changes to school operations. Thank you for your continued support. Please stay safe and warm!
