The AMS boys soccer team won a close game over Darlington yesterday, 3-2 to advance to the region championship next Wednesday at Gordon Central! The game started off quick as Darlington struck fast and left us down 0-1. Warriors were unfazed and set their feet to counter just a few minutes later. Genaro Navarro took a shot from right wing that rebounded into a waiting Edwin Artola-Flores who sent a beautiful low curling ball into the bottom right corner of the net for the equalizer. 1-1 on the reset and Darlington went straight down field minutes later with 16 minutes left in the first half. A loose ball (50/50) headed right for Adrian Rubio who attempted to make a play but was taken out on a hard foul (no call) by Darlington. The ball dribble past an injured Rubio for the second Darlington goal. The game was stopped and I had to take Rubio off the field to assess his injury. He had a deep cleat mark right above the knee inside his thigh that cramped up and he couldn't walk well. Knoah Joynes stepped in as keeper in his biggest role yet. Darlington pressed hard with the backup in net but Knoah Joynes stood tall and was in the fight. Several shots later and Knoah came up with a huge fingertip save pushing the ball over the cross bar and out of play. Knoah kept the game close for us. Edwin was able to carry the ball unassisted up field and dribbled past several waiting Darlington defenders. Another beautiful touch and cross right off the keepers finger tips for his second goal and another equalizer and a 2-2 match. Rubio was able to come back into the game and was able to rally during the half. The second half was eventful after a corner piece that was called handball against Darlington. Once again Edwin stepped up for the PK and buried the third goal of the game and the hat trick. 3-2 late in the second half when Darlington's #10 was red carded for inappropriate language. Playing man down for the remaining 12 minutes, the Warriors were able to control possession and run the clock out to secure the win. Great game played by our defense of Wildon Garcia, Mathew Lara, Daniel de la Cruz an Easton Allen. Adrian Rubio and Knoah Joynes played brilliantly at keeper and kept us in the game. Matthew Morse subbed several times and had great ball movement up field and broke past their defense several times. Offensively it was Edwin scoring goals but not without some great touches by Naythan Alvarez, Joel Menchaca, Santos Champet, and Kerwin Garcia.
