One of the most important things your child can do to achieve academic success is also one of the most basic - going to school every day! In fact, research has shown your child’s attendance record may be the biggest factor influencing their academic success. By attending class regularly, your child is more likely to keep up with their daily lessons and assignments and take quizzes and tests on time. #attendancematters

Ms. Bishop's class is at it again! Shown here are students practicing points of view by performing readers theater for the class! Understanding points of view helps students analyze literature, improves their critical thinking skills, and helps them understand the author's purpose. All of these skills contribute greatly to increasing comprehension! Way to go!

Ms. Childer's PALS class had special visitors recently!

"Grandparents are voices of the past and the door to the future. They provide us with the wisdom from a lifetime of experience that should never be undervalued." - Unknown
Belwood knows ALL Grandparents would love to come visit, but can't always make it. We feel the love and love you back!

Ms. Scroggs 2nd grade class has been reading the book Thunder Cake by Patricia Polacco. Students were actually able to experience making a Thunder Cake this week.
From the book:
A loud clap of thunder booms, and rattles the windows of Grandma's old farmhouse. "This is Thunder Cake baking weather," calls Grandma, as she and her granddaughter hurry to gather the ingredients around the farm. A real Thunder Cake must reach the oven before the storm arrives. But the list of ingredients is long and not easy to find . . . and the storm is coming closer all the time!
Please ask your student how Thunder Cake tastes:). Thank you Ms. Scroggs for making the story come to life!

Miss Jackie Velasco was Caught Being Good this week at Belwood! Jackie saw a PreK student crying and immediately went to comfort and console the student until she stopped crying and felt better! Jackie demonstrated something called Empathy.
Having empathy enables us to build those social connections. To feel connected to others is hugely important for us to be our best. It is the very basis of human relationships and helps us to feel valued, loved, and cared for. Thank you Jackie for modeling empathy, promoting good health, and helping a younger student feel loved:)

Tomorrow, Sept. 15th, is an "At-Home Learning" day for Gordon County Schools!

Second graders in Ms. Bishop's class are shown here practicing their graphing skills! When students understand how graphs work, they unlock a quick way to understand and interpret data.
And by creating simple bar or line graphs, children learn to ask questions and gather information about themselves and their surroundings. They also learn to sort and organize objects based on information. They are having so much fun learning important life skills!
Good job Ms. Bishop's class!

Hip Hip Hooray Carter for being a leader at Belwood!

Today was a percussion review relay race in specials. Students had to sort percussion instruments by how they are played - strike, scrape, or shake. Then, students had to label each instrument. It was a great way to review the percussion family and have fun at the same time!
Children love engaging with music and movement in early childhood education. It helps them express their feelings and emotions, learn to work in groups and develop their self-confidence and imagination.

Jayden Turner was Caught Being Good last week when he volunteered to lend a hand when Belwood was short a custodian. Children who do chores often have higher self-esteem, are more responsible, and are better equipped to deal with frustration, adversity, and delayed gratification. These skills can lead to greater success in school, work, and relationships. Thank you Jayden for stepping in when help was needed!

Please read this important information about how families can help build better readers - English and Spanish version.

Mrs. Holt came and read a story to Mrs. Hales class about nutrition on Monday. Reading aloud is one of the most important things parents and teachers can do with children. Reading aloud builds many important foundational skills, introduces vocabulary, provides a model of fluent, expressive reading, and helps children recognize what reading for pleasure is all about.
At home, spending time together while reading aloud helps to create strong parent-child bonds and promotes healthy brain development. Children that are read to more often have improved language and listening skills, experience stronger emotional connections to their loved ones, and gain a lifelong love of reading. #readathome

Historically, September is attendance awareness month. To celebrate attendance, we will once again have a friendly competition among our schools!

Detective Fox from the Gordon County Sheriff's Office was able to demonstrate proper flag etiquette today for 5th grade students who are part of Belwood's Leadership Team. Students are recommended by their 4th grade teachers because they are reliable, dependable, and responsible students. Over the course of the past few years, the teachers and staff at BES have watched these students mature and grow into positive role models for their peers. Not only are these students excellent academically, they make good behavior choices, and demonstrate that they are willing to care and serve their school community.
The American flag has a long history and is our nation's most iconic symbol of freedom. It is a huge honor and responsibility for these students to raise and lower the flag each day at Belwood. Thank you Detective Fox for modeling leadership, respect and honor today!

Third graders in Ms. Kelley's class had a book tasting on Friday of the first novel they will read and study together. Students previewed the book, made predictions, and enjoyed a treat! Starbucks donated cups 😀
