Red Ribbon Week is a time for schools to encourage students to make healthy choices, stay drug-free, and understand how positive decisions can help them build a strong future. Fun dress-up days like My Hero Day give students a chance to celebrate that message while showing plenty of school spirit.

Please remember to turn in all orders by Friday, October 30th. Also, write your child's full name and homeroom teacher on the flyer to ensure they receive credit for their sales.
From October 26 through November 1, families are encouraged to read together for at least 20 minutes. Spending time reading as a family helps build literacy skills, strengthens relationships, and creates meaningful learning experiences at home.
Families can also enter for a chance to win a Family Engagement Prize Basket in one of two ways:
1. Send a selfie with a homemade “We Did It!” sign to Kerri Chatman at kchatman@gcbe.org. Include the student’s name and school.
2. Email a short description of what and how your family read together to kchatman@gcbe.org. Include the student’s name and school.
We hope families across Gordon County Schools will join in this week and make reading together part of their family time!
Students will be allowed to wear their costumes to school on Friday, October 30. Your child’s safety is always our first concern here at Fairmount. We ask that you guide their selection of costumes to allow them to comfortably work and learn throughout the day, as well as be able to independently use the restroom. Any items that encourage violence or could be scary to other children are inappropriate for children at school. All accessories to costumes should be left at home. We are not responsible for lost or damaged items. Students are not allowed to wear full-faced masks. Classes will enjoy a snack and craft during the school day. This is for the students only. Thank you for your cooperation in making this a fun and safe day at school. We are looking forward to an enjoyable day!
Gordon County Schools is excited to celebrate Family Engagement Month with our “We Did It!” Family Challenge, taking place October 26 through November 20!
Strong families help build strong schools, and we know that even small moments spent together can make a big difference. Throughout these four weeks, we are encouraging families across our district to participate in simple, meaningful activities that help them grow, connect, and succeed together.
Each week features a different family challenge:
Week 1: Read Together
Spend 20 minutes reading together as a family. Whether it is a favorite book, a bedtime story, or something new, take time to enjoy reading with one another.
Week 2: Get Moving!
Get active as a family! Take a walk, play outside, or complete a family exercise challenge. Find a fun way to enjoy physical activity together.
Week 3: Talk Together
Make time for a family conversation using conversation starters that will be provided. This challenge encourages families to communicate, share experiences, and strengthen their connections.
Week 4: Give Together
Do something kind for another person. Whether it is helping a neighbor, supporting someone in need, or finding another way to show kindness, families are encouraged to make a positive difference together.
Participate for a Chance to Win a Family Prize Pack! Families who complete a challenge can enter for a chance to win a Family Prize Pack! Each school will select a winner through a random drawing from the entries received.
Families can submit their participation in one of two ways:
1. Take a selfie of your family completing the activity while holding a homemade “We Did It!” sign.
OR
2. Send a brief written description of the activity your family completed together.
Be sure to include your student's name and school with your submission. Email your entries to Kerri Chatman at kchatman@gcbe.org.
We encourage all Gordon County Schools families to take part in this special month of activities. You do not need elaborate plans or expensive experiences to make meaningful memories. Reading a book, sharing a conversation, getting outside, or showing kindness can help strengthen family relationships and support student success.

Mrs. Santos modeled how to write a body paragraph, and the class created a shared template for stating opinions and supporting them with clear reasons. Students had already completed their introduction paragraphs the day before and are now learning how to strengthen their writing with solid reasoning and transition words.

Rebecca Champion is in her 21st year as an educator and her 6th year as principal of Fairmount Elementary School. She values the opportunity to lead, serve, and encourage others while helping create a school environment where students can learn, grow, and prepare for the future.
Mrs. Champion believes Fairmount Elementary is special because of the strong sense of community that exists throughout the school. Students, staff, and families know one another well, and that close connection helps create a welcoming environment where people feel supported and included. She is proud of the Bulldog spirit at Fairmount and of the school’s reputation as “the small school with a big heart.”
Mrs. Champion is especially proud of the determination shown by both students and staff. Champion sees students working through challenges, pushing themselves, and making progress academically and personally. She also appreciates the dedication and teamwork of the staff, who work together to meet student needs and support continued growth.
One message Mrs. Champion wants every student to know is that she is proud of them. She wants students to understand that they are valued for who they are today and that she believes in the people they are becoming.
Outside of school, Champion enjoys spending time with her family, including her husband, Jeff, her children Gregory, Bethany, and Naythan, and her mother, Eloise. She also enjoys relaxing on her back porch, visiting the beach, and playing the piano, especially hymns and other meaningful songs.
During National Principals Month, Gordon County Schools is proud to recognize Rebecca Champion for her leadership, dedication, and commitment to the students, staff, and families of Fairmount Elementary School.
