August was a fun month for the Forensic Science classes. We learned the procedures for criminal investigation from the crime scene to the court room. The unit was completed by a visit from Lt. Detective Jay Johnston. Lt. Johnston came with a collection of items that he uses for crime scene investigations in Gordon County. He showed the students how to dust for latent prints, how to obtain DNA samples from suspects, and how to properly bag evidence. His visit helped our classes to see the real-world life of crime scene detectives in our area. We would like to thank Gordon County Sheriff’s Department for being willing to come out to Sonoraville High School and share their experience with us!

Last Wednesday, September 14, a group of SHS Chorus and Theatre students traveled to downtown Atlanta to the Rialto Center for the Arts and Georgia State University to participate in SingFest! 2022. These students rehearsed 2 selections of SATB music beforehand and while at GSU, they were able to work with Dr. Deanna Joseph and Dr. Jennifer Sengin, who are both Choral conductors at the university. After so much uncertainty and so many cancellations during the Covid pandemic, it was a new and fresh experience for our SHS singers. At the end of the day of rehearsals and GSU Q&A sessions, and college performances, they were part of a mass choir of 400+ students from around Georgia as they performed on an afternoon concert alongside the GSU Choirs. All 23 SHS singers had positive comments and were asking to attend again next year. This was a great opportunity for many of them to see and hear collegiate performers and get a feel for what GSU has to offer. Many upperclassmen came away wanting to know more about GSU as a possible college choice for the future!

Today Mr. Grizzle's Spanish 2 class completed CPR certification with Nurse Sandy Barton. Mr. Grizzle believes this is a fantastic way to apply Spanish outside of the classroom in real world situations. Being able to communicate with people in an emergency could help save a life. The more people that are CPR certified in our community provides a higher probability of a life being saved. Students learned how to communicate and get information from someone in Spanish, how to identify the symptoms of heart attacks and strokes or if someone is choking, and how to provide CPR and get help. His students are excited about the fact this is something they can take with them out of the classroom and use in the real world.
