Ashworth Middle School computer science teacher Matt Wiley had his students working on some really cool projects today! Students were creating clues about a country or major city for others to be able to solve within 20 yes or no questions. This ranged from multiple facts about their location, such as geographic location, landmarks, climates, culture, and more!

Students were also learning about A.I. and how accurate it can be discovering locations with just a few clues. The students were having a great time working together and getting ready to present! #ExtraordinaryGCS #ExtraordinaryAMS

NOTICE OF PROPERTY TAX INCREASE

The Gordon County Board of Education has tentatively adopted a millage rate which will require an increase in property taxes by 6.98 percent.

All concerned citizens are invited to the public hearing on this tax increase to be held at the Gordon County Schools Central Office, 7300 Fairmount Highway, Calhoun, GA on August 26, 2025 at 7:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.

Times and places of additional public hearings on this tax increase are at the Gordon County Schools Central Office, 7300 Fairmount Highway, Calhoun, GA on September 8, 2025 at 6:00 p.m.

This tentative increase will result in a millage rate of 15.65 mills, an increase of 1.021 mills. Without this tentative tax increase, the millage rate will be no more than 14.629 mills. The proposed tax increase for a home with a fair market value of $200,000 is approximately $80.86 and the proposed tax increase for nonhomestead property with a fair market value of $200,000 is approximately $81.68.

PRESS RELEASE ANNOUNCING PROPOSED PROPERTY TAX INCREASE

August 16, 2025

The Gordon County Board of Education today announces its intention to increase the 2025 property taxes it will levy this year by 6.98 percent over the rollback millage rate.

The Gordon County Board of Education is proposing to reduce the property tax millage rate from the 2024 rate of 16.364 to 15.650. This proposal reflects our ongoing commitment to the responsible and efficient use of taxpayer resources. We are grateful for the continued support of our community as we work to provide high-quality education for all students.

When the total digest of taxable property is prepared, Georgia law requires that a rollback millage rate must be computed that will produce the same total revenue on the current year’s digest that last year’s millage rate would have produced had no reassessments occurred.

The budget adopted by the Gordon County Board of Education requires a millage rate higher than the rollback millage rate; therefore, before the Gordon County Board of Education may set a final millage rate, Georgia law requires three public hearings to be held to allow the public an opportunity to express their opinions on the increase.

All concerned citizens are invited to the public hearings on this tax increase to be held at the Gordon County Schools Central Office, 7300 Fairmount Highway, Calhoun, GA on August 26, 2025 at 7:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. and on September 8, 2025 at 6:00 p.m.
