It's Week 3 of our Parent and Family Engagement Month Contest! Post your activities here for November 17th through November 20th on the calendar. Prizes will be distributed Friday, November 21st!

Gordon County Schools is celebrating Parent and Family Engagement Month this November with a fun district-wide contest designed to strengthen the connection between home and school. Elementary and middle school families can complete activities from the Family Engagement Calendars (also available on the district website) and post photos of their family participating. Each post counts as one entry into a random drawing, and multiple posts are encouraged.

Share on Social Media: Look for our weekly Facebook post, where you can comment with your child’s name, school, and a picture or video of your family completing an activity together. Alternatively, you may message this Facebook page with the information and picture. Please note that we may use the images for promotional materials (but not the other information shared).

The contest runs from November 2 through November 20, with winners announced on November 21. Prizes will be sent home with students before Thanksgiving break.

Our elementary and middle schools will award a Family Connection Prize Pack that includes a family pass for four to the Savoy Automobile Museum, a gift card to a local restaurant, and a Connect 4 game with snacks for a fun family game night at home.

Gift cards have been generously donated by our local partners and community supporters, such as Big John’s Restaurant, Cassie’s On Main, Chick-fil-A, Yellow Jacket Drive-In, Christian & Jake’s, Food Lion, Food City, Walmart, and more!

Join Gordon County Schools in celebrating family engagement. Complete the activities, share your photos, and show how your family connects at home and in the community. Be Extraordinary! #ExtraordinaryGCS

Sonoraville Elementary 5th grade teacher August Davis led an engaging lesson where students explored the history and economics of the U.S. cattle trails during the 1800s. Students read and interpreted texts about the Oregon Trail and then applied what they learned by playing the Oregon Trail game, where they analyzed the consequences of their decisions along the journey.

It was a fun and interactive way to connect history, reading, and critical thinking, and students were having fun!

Thank you to the Gordon Central High School school nutrition staff for providing an amazing Thanksgiving lunch today. Their hard work, dedication, and care were evident in every part of the meal, and we appreciate all they do to serve students and staff throughout the year.

Today’s lunch guests included kindergarten students from Tolbert Elementary, who visited GCHS to participate in learning activities with Kodi Albright’s Teaching as a Profession students, as well as veterans honored with a special luncheon.

Also, let's hear it for the staff at Belwood Elementary, Red Bud Middle, Sonoraville Elementary, and Tolbert Elementary who also served Thanksgiving lunches today! Ashworth served theirs on November 4th, and Fairmount Elementary will have theirs on November 18th!

We are grateful to the entire school nutrition team for consistently going above and beyond to provide delicious and nutritious meals for our schools!

Thank you to Erlanger’s Life Force Air Medical team and AdventHealth for bringing such an incredible learning experience to Sonoraville High School. The Life Force helicopter landed at The Furnace, giving students a firsthand look at emergency medical services in action.

Healthcare pathway students had the opportunity to meet and speak with real heroes who risk their lives every day to save others. This experience offered valuable insight and inspiration for students who may one day pursue careers in healthcare and emergency response.

We are grateful for this extraordinary partnership and the chance to provide our students with such a meaningful and memorable experience.

Tolbert Elementary 1st grade teacher Summer Barton worked with her students in small group activities focused on reading and grammar skills. Students practiced independent reading and learned how to identify the difference between declarative and interrogative sentences.

If you’d like to brush up on this skill too, declarative sentences make statements and end with a period, while interrogative sentences ask questions and end with a question mark. These young learners are building strong foundations in communication and sentence structure through engaging, hands-on lessons!
