SPLOST has made a tremendous impact across Gordon County Schools, funding important upgrades and improvements that benefit students, staff, and the entire community. Gordon County Schools is celebrating Parent and Family Engagement Month this November with a fun district-wide contest designed to strengthen the connection between home and school. Elementary and middle school families can complete activities from the Family Engagement Calendars (also available on the district website) and post photos of their family participating. Each post counts as one entry into a random drawing, and multiple posts are encouraged.

The contest runs from November 2 through November 20, with winners announced on November 21. Prizes will be sent home with students before Thanksgiving break.

During Flex Learning Friday today, Gordon County Schools faculty and staff are engaging in collaborative planning, training sessions, and professional development opportunities across the district.
The Transportation Department completed Stop the Bleed training led by AdventHealth, while the School Nutrition team heard from keynote speaker Lisa Drake about building meaningful connections with students. Meanwhile, elementary teachers participated in LETRS (Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling) training to strengthen literacy instruction.

The Voluntary Action Center Community Kitchen in Calhoun provides free hot meals each weekday for those in need. Meals are served at 343 South Wall Street.
Lunch: Monday through Friday, 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. (dine-in only)

Gordon County Schools is partnering with the Voluntary Action Center to collect non-perishable food items for families right here in our community. Every donation helps provide hot meals and groceries to those in need.
Suggested items include canned vegetables, beans, soups, proteins, pasta, and instant noodles. Last year, our schools donated more than 13,000 items. Let’s see if we can top that in 2025!

Menus for November -- We will celebrate National Donut Day on November 5th, and later in the month, we'll serve a traditional Thanksgiving meal for everyone to enjoy before the November 24-28 break. Each school will set their date for the Thanksgiving meal, so check with your child's school to see when they can enjoy roasted turkey, dressing, mashed potatoes, gravy, etc, etc!

Director of Early Learning and Elementary Education Beth Herod hosted the Georgia Language Arts Supervisors (GLAS) meeting today at the Gordon County Schools Central Office. During the session, participants received important updates on state assessments from Lisa Hardman, Assessment Specialist with the Georgia Department of Education.

Gordon Central’s Teaching as a Profession class hosted Swain Elementary kindergarten students today for fun, hands-on learning activities and projects led by Mrs. Albright’s TAP students! #ExtraordinaryGCS
Last month, the WALKING and WATER Wellness Challenge included a friendly competition to see which school or department could log the most walking minutes during September. The Transportation Department came out on top as the overall winner!
In celebration of Transportation Appreciation Week, a prize drawing was held for participating staff members. Gift cards from Sonic, RAK Outfitters, and DiPrima’s Shoes were awarded to several Transportation employees. Congratulations to Ashley Carroll, Natalie Williams, Jennie Elmore, Janice Nix, Marie Dixon, and Kira Sheriff for winning gift cards, along with others who received Sonic gift cards for their participation.
To make things even more fun, Director Tim Watkins promised to have his head shaved if Transportation won the challenge—and he followed through on that commitment!

The event began with an opening ceremony featuring a parade of athletes and remarks from local organizers and leaders. Volunteers and staff helped coordinate events throughout the day, ensuring that each athlete had the opportunity to participate and be recognized for their achievements.
Families, classmates, and supporters cheered on each student and event. Athletes were celebrated with a ribbon ceremony after each event to acknowledge their success and sportsmanship.

Gordon County Schools students continue to demonstrate strong academic achievement, outperforming national averages on the 2025 ACT.
According to results released by the Georgia Department of Education, Georgia students overall exceeded national averages for the ninth consecutive year—and Gordon County students contributed to that success with impressive local results across all tested areas. Students from Gordon County Schools achieved an average composite score of 20.4, compared to the national average of 19.4. GCS students surpassed national averages in every subject area, showing particular strength in reading and science.
For the ninth year in a row, Georgia students as a whole outperformed their peers nationwide on the ACT, even as the national average remained steady. State School Superintendent Richard Woods praised students and educators statewide for their commitment to academic success, saying, “We are nearing a decade of Georgia students beating the national average on the ACT, with similar results on the SAT. Despite the challenges public schools across the country have faced over the last decade, our students continue to outperform the national average—our teachers, school leaders, families, and students should take great pride in that accomplishment.”
The ACT measures students’ readiness for college-level coursework in English, mathematics, reading, and science. Gordon County Schools’ strong performance reflects the district’s dedication to preparing students for postsecondary success and future careers.
